A Netflix period drama has already won fans over despite only dropping 48 hours ago, so it’s time to cancel your weekend plans and get binge-watching.

House of Guinness, created by Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight, follows the story of the Guinness family who founded the world-famous brewery.

Set in the 19th century, the series picks up as millionaire and philanthropist Sir Benjamin Guinness dies, leaving his four children to pick up the family business and continue his legacy.

Billed as ‘stout Succession’ by TV critics, the Dublin-set drama features a cast of some huge names, such as Anthony Boyle, James Norton, Emily Fairn, and Game of Thrones star Jack Gleeson.

The series currently holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, just over 48 hours after release, with all eight episodes available on Netflix.

@Bazballinnn commented: ‘Just watched the first episode of House of Guinness and holy shh does it look phenomenal. It’s giving very much Peaky Blinders but music is insanely good.’

Several X users hoped that a second season would be ordered by Netflix after enjoying the first so much, with some fans only left wanting more by the ending.

Writing for Metro, Pierra Willix said: ‘Before tuning into House of Guinness, my knowledge of the family was limited to facts about their famous drink.

‘Now, I have become completely captivated by the story of its origins and how the people tasked with continuing its legacy also did their best to pay back.’

She continued: ‘After much build-up, the season ends on an almighty cliffhanger, which leaves the door open for more seasons to come. I’ll be waiting with great anticipation for that.’

Elsewhere, The Guardian described House of Guinness by saying ‘Steven Knight has never made a better show’ – high praise for the man who made Peaky Blinders.

Their critic said the show was ‘a fine drama about people with flaws they can’t overcome, delusions of qualities they don’t possess, and weaknesses their foes will inevitably exploit’.

House of Guinness has mostly been compared to Succession, which also saw four siblings vying for control of their family business due to their father’s advanced age and ailing health.

Meanwhile, the Standard wrote: ‘[House of Guinness] has a pretty juicy set-up, adding that Steven Knight may turn the new series into something like Succession, only with more Stout.’

Paste described the drama as: ‘The show mixes capitalist scheming, political intrigue, and public philanthropy with family rivalries, ill-advised romantic affairs, and public scandal.

‘The comparisons to HBO’s Succession in the lead-up to the show’s debut have been both frequent and fair.’

House of Guinness is available to stream on Netflix.
