Carrie Bradshaw has a brand-new neighbor who seems like an absolute nightmare, but that could all change soon. Last week, “And Just Like That” introduced us to Duncan Reeves, a moody British writer living in an apartment beneath Carrie’s Gramercy Park townhouse. He was miserable, rude, and also a writer who traveled to New York City for six months at a time to write.
TV Line interviewed AJLT’s executive producers, and as it turns out, Duncan may be precisely what Carrie needs. Having Carrie bond with another writer âwas exciting for us, because she hasnât had that kind of connection with a man before, aside from Berger in the original [Sex and the City] and we all know how that turned out,” says executive producer Julie Rottenberg.
Carrie and Duncan’s Intellectual Connection
Duncan Reeves immediately disliked Carrie because she never takes her high heels off. He can hear every step that she takes on her wood floors, and she takes a lot of them, constantly. He confronted her upon meeting and eventually whipped out an Amazon package with pink slippers that Carrie refused to wear.
But Duncan later opened up to Carrie about his difficulties working on a biography of Margaret Thatcher, and she confessed her nerves about writing fiction for the first time. The two writers ultimately bonded over their shared fear of failure.
Could Emotional Intimacy Lead to More for Carrie and Duncan?
The two clicked as writers and then understood each other on a deeper level, plus their chemistry is palpable. “There is sort of a fantasy of being able to connect with someone in a very intellectual and emotional way,â says Rottenberg. âThereâs nothing better than cracking a problem together with a writing partner and thinking together and learning how the other person thinks and helping each other. Itâs thrilling.”
Also, “Weâve never seen Carrie write with anyone else,â EP Elisa Zuritsky points out. âIn some ways, this season, probably more than any other in the whole series, really leans into Carrie as a writer in a more real way.â
So, with Aidan hundreds of miles away in Virginia, insisting that Carrie wait five years for them to be together, could Duncan become something more to her? So far, Carrie has been willing to wait for Aiden, but that could eventually change. Could her creative connection with Duncan Reeves eventually become a romantic one?
