Despite coming into the contest with blazing determination, the actor was among several other contestants to be taken out of the race. Read on to learn what sparked the medical emergency, and find out who remains to fight for the prize.

Allergic Reaction Takes a Dangerous Turn

E! News says the 43-year-old was forced to walk away during the October 9 episode of the Fox reality battle after an allergic reaction left him struggling to breathe. It all began when the contestants had to navigate through the brutal surroundings of a simulated war zone and attempt to retrieve “fallen comrades.” The intense heat of the Moroccan desert where the game took place added another layer to the challenge.

Smollett began heaving during the challenge and developed a rapidly worsening cough. The three-time NAACP Awards winner still wanted to keep fighting, and explained in a confessional clip, “My older sister told me, ‘Jussie, you do not have to prove anything,’ but I do. I want to show myself I can do it.”

However, upon visiting the medic to be checked out, he was informed he had widespread inflammation in his chest. He was dismayed to learn from Dr. Andy that he was experiencing a serious allergic reaction to something in the dust. The doctor declared, “His chest sounds horrendous.”
