Celebrity Traitors came to an extremely dramatic close last week.
Alan Carr emerged triumphant after tricking Nick Mohammed and David Olusoga into unknowingly banishing fellow Faithful Joe Marler.
Joe, however, has now revealed he nearly left the Traitor’s castle a lot earlier after receiving some devestating family news.
The former England rugby player admitted he considered leaving the show after his wife’s grandmother passed away during filming.
“The producers already knew she was terminally ill, so I went to them and said: “That’s me done,”‘ Joe told The Times. ‘They were great — I was leaving.
‘Then Daisy rang back and said, “Look, there’s not a lot you can do right now, so just stay up there until you get kicked out.”‘
Joe claims that’s the moment he decided to change his approach to the game and get over his ‘impostor syndrome’.
‘That was the moment that I was like, right, I’ve had enough of this impostor syndrome,’ he continued. ‘I’m gonna ramp it up, go hell for leather, and if I get banished or murdered, it’s a win — I can go home.’
The next night, Joe decided to air his suspicions about veteran TV presenter Jonathan Ross, which ultimately led to the Faithful knocking out their first Traitor.
‘I enjoyed it so much, this fantastic game!’ he explained. ‘But yeah, the whole point of a game is to win it and the rest of the time I was eating.’
Despite winning the nation’s hearts by knocking Jonathan out of the competition, Joe admits his kids’ favourite was Alan Carr.
Alan, of course, won the jackpot, scooping the £87,500 prize for his chosen charity, Neuroblastoma UK.
Since then, the chatty comedian has enjoyed something of a resurgence in popularity.
There are rumours that the BBC is considering bringing back his old chat show Chatty Man, and he’s been linked with arguably the biggest job at the BBC.
No, not the Director General position. He’s been touted as a replacement host on Strictly Come Dancing now Claudia and Tess have annouced they’re quitting.
‘Alan’s comedy talents were showcased perfectly in the Traitors castle, and it’s reminded many people just how funny he is,’ a source told The Mirror.
‘Even people who claimed they didn’t like him before have loved watching him laugh and lie his way through the episodes.’
They added: ‘It would be no surprise if Chatty Man now got a reboot – not necessarily on Channel 4 – and the Beeb could do way worse than letting Alan loose in the ballroom. He’d be a hoot.’
