TV fans have been left ‘intrigued’ by a Channel 4 thriller that has been dubbed ‘Scotland’s White Lotus’.
Starring Harry Potter and Bridget Jones actress Shirley Henderson, Summerwater is a psychological drama based on Sarah Moss’s novel of the same.
Told from multiple different perspectives, the story follows the interwoven lives of holidaymakers in a Scottish loch-side cabin park over a single 24-hour period.
Taking to social media following the release of its first episode on Sunday night, viewers praised the ‘good but very strange’ storyline of the six-part series.
Writing on X, @francescajayne_ said: ‘I am so lost 😂 my anxiety is also through the roof, what a stressful programme.’
@Demelcy similarly wrote: ‘What weirdness is this?! #summerwater’
@Olivia33x added: ‘Summerwater – Wow. Very good first epsiode… This is very intriguing.’
Meanwhile, @GSRHighlander argued that it was ‘good but very strange’.
Throughout the series, the drama – which also stars Dougray Scott, Valene Kane, Game of Thrones’s Jamie Sives and Daniel Rigby – explores simmering tensions and hidden secrets, culminating in a devastating tragedy.
The narrative also focuses on a family of newcomers who draw the attention of the other residents, leading to rising paranoia and conflict.
However, while many fans enjoyed the ‘strange’ method of storytelling, a large portion of viewers were turned off by the ‘slightly too weird’ direction the series takes.
Also taking to X, @poshsimon wrote: ‘I stuck with #summerwater for 20 minutes in the hope of something captivating. Too way out of it for me, goodbye.’
@PippyG82 added: ‘Not sure how I feel about #Summerwater – part-gripping but part-slightly-too-weird….. 🫤’
@chowellz also said: ‘I’m not sure whether to bother with any more #Summerwater not ONE likeable characters so far. And Justine’s family will die of malnutrition before next Ep, I suspect #FeedYaFamily 🤣🤣’
An official synopsis of the series reads: ‘At a Scottish loch-side cabin park, multiple families deal with hidden tensions and personal struggles while experiencing brief moments of joy from their separate vacation homes.’
Summerwater marks Channel 4’s latest drama to be released, following the success of Trespasses, which is based on Louise Kennedy’s book.
Set in 1970s Belfast, the ‘harrowing’ drama sees a Catholic teacher drawn into a dangerous affair with a Protestant barrister.
Summerwater is available to watch on Channel 4.
