Channel 4 viewers accuse Gogglebox of becoming ‘Reform TV’

Viewers of Channel 4 have accused Gogglebox of becoming ‘Reform TV’ in its coverage of recent events.

In addition to a tribute to late cast member Ken Harwood, last night’s episode included coverage from the recent UK local elections.

In doing so, the cast commented upon controversial right-wing party Reform’s considerable gains, amid a series of humiliating losses for Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labour Party.

‘We like Reform, don’t we?’ said Lara Fawcett – sister of TV survivalist Bear Grylls – as footage showed members of the party celebrating their win.

‘We do,’ said mother-in-law Sara, ‘I like Nigel Farage,’ before acknowledging that a lot of her friends ‘think he’s awful.’

‘Whatever you think about them, there’s some appeal,’ said Simon Minty – sentiments which were met with considerable backlash on social media as the episode aired.

The show spending so much time on Farage’s political gains was met with a sense of dismay from social media users.

This included X user Mario, who accused the broadcaster of ‘promoting’ the political party, while Rich described last night’s Gogglebox as being ‘full-on Reform.’

Darrxgh noted that the show appeared to be ‘glazing up Reform,’ as Adriano_Magliocco asked on Threads: ‘When did Gogglebox become Reform TV?’

Meanwhile, X user Gemma had no time for any of it, stressing that ‘we don’t want politics on Gogglebox.’

Interestingly, both ends of the political spectrum seemed to feel unfairly targeted, with Foster ‘Twelvetrees’ Whiteboard accusing the show of ‘piling on Starmer,’ while Pundeag called it a ‘hit job’ on Farage.

The truth is likely somewhere in the middle, with Gogglebox’s commentators representing a cross-section of society and broad political opinion.

‘I think everyone wants to mix it up,’ Daniella told pal Danielle ‘I’m just concerned about what we’re mixing it up with.’

While admitting that he ‘didn’t like it’, Simon acknowledged that the party were ‘tapping into’ something that people ‘want to hear.’

Meanwhile, Julie of the Malone family said that she didn’t even know who to vote for, because she felt ‘so disillusioned.’

Whether or not Keir Starmer manages to hold onto his position of Prime Minister, Shaun only hopes that he can tough it out until after the summer.

‘Cos he said he’ll let pubs stay open an extra two hours in the World Cup,’ he joked.

In 2014, Channel 4 dropped the Michael family from the cast after it was revealed that dad Andy would be standing as an MP for UKIP in that year’s elections.

‘Mr. Michael has confirmed his proposed candidacy as a UKIP MP,’ Channel 4 told Newsbeat at the time.

‘Sadly any Gogglebox cast member who becomes a candidate for a political party will have to step down from their involvement in Gogglebox.

‘It’s with great regret that the Michaels are no longer in the show,’ they finished, describing the Michaels as ‘excellent contributors.’

However, the family returned a year later, after he failed to win his seat for UKIP, putting a halt to his political career.

Tragically, in 2021, it was announced that Andy had died after a short illness, with a statement from Studio Lambert sharing that he passed with his family by his side.

The family first appeared in Gogglebox’s debut episode in 2013, with dad Andy joined by wife Carolyn and kids Louis, Alex, Pascal and Katy. 

Earlier this month, it was revealed that former Gogglebox cast member Josh Tapper had also made a move into politics as a Labour Councillor.

Just 15 when he first appeared on Gogglebox in 2013, he’s now all grown up, and successful in winning a seat for the Underhill ward in the London Borough of Barnet. 

‘From reversing Tory neglect on our green spaces to pioneering institutional change of mental health support, I’ve always shown that no matter how big the challenge, I’ll always take it on and get the job done,’ he said when he first announced his political aspirations in 2022.
