Charlize Theron Reveals She’s on Dating App Raya and Why It’s Not Working

Even A-list actresses have to deal with disappointing dating app experiences. Charlize Theron confirmed she’s on the exclusive celebrity dating app Raya during Thursday’s episode of “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” but her search hasn’t been particularly successful. The 49-year-old Oscar winner opened up about her frustrations with the platform and why she’s essentially stopped using it after just two dates.

“I don’t do anything with it,” Theron told host Andy Cohen. “Yes, I don’t do anything with it. A friend put me on it, I went on two dates, and then I just kind of [stopped].”

The “Mad Max: Fury Road” star didn’t hold back when describing her main complaints about the men she’s encountered on the platform. Her observations reveal profiles that don’t quite match reality, a common frustration many dating app users can relate to, regardless of their celebrity status.

“Every guy has a Burning Man picture and they’re a CEO, like of nothing, or like a fitness [instructor],” Theron explained during the show. “And then you meet with them and they’re not, and they just say it up front! I’m like, ‘Well, why did you put that on your thing?’ No, I don’t like it.”

Dating Life After High-Profile Relationships

Speculation about Theron joining Raya first emerged last November following her breakup with model boyfriend Alex Dimitrijevic. This relationship marked her most recent public romance since her high-profile relationship with actor Sean Penn, which lasted from 2013 to 2015.

This isn’t Theron’s first time discussing her dating experiences publicly. The Oscar winner has previously shared insights about her romantic relationships and how her approach has evolved over the years.

“I was very fortunate that I was raised by this very strong mom,” she explained on “The Drew Barrymore Show” in January 2021. “There’s this strength that always came with growing up around her. And yet, in my 20s and early 30s, I tried to make myself smaller in a relationship because you think that’s ultimately the problem.”

Theron described those earlier relationship patterns as “ridiculous,” explaining how she’s learned to embrace her full potential. With her new perspective, she now approaches relationships with different expectations and standards.

“You gotta come with a lot of game,” she continued. “The kind of game that’s like, ‘My life is really good, so you better be able to bring that and maybe better because I won’t accept anything less.’ My life with my children and my incredible adopted family that I have around me, I don’t long for that much.”

Balancing Single Motherhood and Career

Beyond her dating life, Theron remains focused on raising her two adopted daughters, Jackson, 11, and August, 9, whom she welcomed into her family in 2012 and 2015, respectively. The actress has been open about the realities of single motherhood and how her children keep her grounded.

“Oh, my God, they’re so embarrassed by me constantly,” Theron told E! News in July 2024. “They’re kids, they’re girls, you know? I have a preteen and I feel like I have a 9-year-old who thinks she’s a 13-year-old.”

Her daughters don’t show much interest in their mother’s Hollywood accomplishments either. During a May appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Theron shared how her children react to her career achievements. “My children have zero respect for me,” she told Kimmel. “It’s just unbelievable, I feel like I’m pretty humble, but every once in a while I’m like, ‘There’s a [expletive] Oscar right there.’ They are so not impressed with me.”

The actress shared a particularly amusing example of her daughters’ lack of interest in her action sequences. Despite performing an elaborate helicopter stunt for “Old Guard 2“, her child was more impressed by a “Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible” poster they saw while driving.

“My child yesterday just looked at this poster of Tom Cruise and went, ‘It’s weird, he looks so much cooler than you did when you were hanging off the helicopter,’” Theron recalled to Kimmel. “I was just like, ‘I hung off the helicopter, [can I have] some credit?!’”

Theron has previously credited her mother, Gerda Maritz, for helping her navigate single parenthood. “I knew that I would have to have my mom help me if I was going to do this as a single parent,” she told Elle in 2018.
