Chris Evans put real heart into his proposal to Alba Baptista, making it as personal and meaningful as possible. âI proposed to my wife in Portuguese,â the actor told The Knot at the premiere of his new movie “Materialists” on Saturday, June 7. âSheâs Portuguese, so I learned how to say, âWill you marry me?â in Portuguese. I had practiced it all week.â
Evans admitted he rehearsed so much that it nearly became a reflex. âI had practiced it so much that while Iâd be making breakfast and you almost just start saying it out loud. Like, âOh God, thatâs not just a song thatâs stuck in my head! Itâs gonna let the cat out of the bag.ââ
Luckily, he didnât spill the surprise early, but nerves still kicked in during the actual moment. âI got really nervous when it came time to do it,â he said. âI actually think I screwed it up, but I still know it.â
Inside Chris and Albaâs Low-Key Love Story
Evans, 43, and Baptista, 27, were first linked in 2021, but they kept their relationship low-key. They made their relationship Instagram official in January 2023, with a video story of the couple playing pranks on each other.
âA look back at 2022 â¤ï¸â¤ï¸â¤ï¸,â Evans captioned the clip. That same month, a source told Us Weekly that Evans was intensely committed. âThis is the most committed anyone can remember him being in a very long time, if not ever,â the source said, adding that they enjoyed the âquiet lifeâ together in Massachusetts.
Why Evans Took a Step Back From Hollywood
Evans slowed down professionally as the relationship progressed. âI havenât worked all year and I donât plan to, which has been lovely,â he told GQ in a September 2023 interview.
âMy girlfriend that Iâve had for a while, when we began dating, I was like: âYeah, I do one movie a year. I try to never work now.â And then, after, like, a few months of dating, boom, guess what? Weâre living in Atlanta for a year [for filming]. Get ready. And even when that year was happening, I was like, man, never again.â
Private Engagement and Two Weddings
Chris and Alba never publicly announced their engagement. As per Vanity Fair, they tied the knot in a private ceremony on Cape Cod in September 2023.
Evans later confirmed they had two ceremonies. âIt was really, really great. We kinda had two ceremonies,â he said at New York Comic Con in October 2023. âWe had one on the East Coast. We did one in Portugal.â âThey were wonderful and beautiful,â he continued. âItâs a lot of planning a wedding. For those of you who are married, it takes a lot out of you. Now that weâre through that, weâve just kinda been enjoying life, gearing up for autumn, my favorite season. Itâs, like, the best time of year right now. Now weâre just relaxing and enjoying life and reflecting.â
In November 2024, when Evans was asked about fatherhood and if he hopes to be a âsuperhero dadâ like his âRed One; costar Dwayne Johnson, Evans spoke to Access Hollywood and said, âYeah, I hope so. Yeah, absolutely. The title of dad is an exciting one.â
