Chris Robshaw’s wife has expressed regret over her comment about the skill level of some of the other Strictly Come Dancing contestants.

The former England rugby captain, 39, has had a rocky start to his journey on the BBC reality series after he and his pro-partner Nadiya Bychkova landed second-to-last in Saturday’s first live show with just 14 points.

This year’s line-up features some previously trained dancers among the celebs, with Emmerdale’s Lewis Cope and Love Island’s Amber Davies – both of whom were recruited after Kristian Nairn and Dani Dyer were forced to pull out, respectively.

After Saturday’s episode, Love Island’s Amber Gill commented on Chris’s wife Camilla Kerslake’s Instagram: ‘Unpopular opinion: I think having people with so much dance experience is unfair.’

She was quick to respond in agreement, saying: ‘The experience differences are absolutely wild. Definitely.’

Now, it seems as though she’s having second thoughts about sharing her opinion.

In a chat with the Daily Mail, Camilla said: ‘I hope my big mouth won’t get Chris in the bottom two. I was furious last week, a protective wife, and I wanted to climb over the desk and give Craig [Revel Horwood] what for.

‘I’m so protective of my husband. I know how hard he’s working, how much this means to him, and I reacted.’

Another aspect of the show Chris and his wife have reflected on is the Strictly curse, which refers to the trend of couples who have broken up following their partner’s stint on Strictly, often ending with them dating their pro instead.

Ahead of the series, sources claimed Camilla made plans to get ahead of the curse by forging a friendship with Nadiya outside of the dance floor.

Then, in a recent interview, the sportsman even joked about how being subject to the Strictly curse rumours would be the highest compliment.

‘Surely if people think there’s something going on between us, we must be doing something right,’ he joked to The Sun.

‘Nadiya and I are a team, both totally focused on the dancing and giving it our all week by week.’

Chris has been with the soprano singer for a decade, and they share two sons together – Wilding and Hunter.

As for the two Strictly contestants with prior dance experience, Amber is coming to the ballroom following a successful career on the West End, while Lewis was runner-up on talent series Got To Dance.

Nonetheless, Amber has defended herself against complaints of an unfair advantage.

She said: ‘I feel like I know they will be like, “She’s trained”. Yes, I did train in musical theatre, however, I am a beginner when it comes to ballroom Latin dancing. So I feel like I will be starting from scratch. I mean, I’ll give it my all.’

Strictly Come Dancing returns tonight at 6:20pm on BBC One.
