Christina Applegate Vulnerably Shares How Her MS Battle Has Deeply Impacted Daughter Sadie

Christina Applegate Opens Up About How MS Has Impacted Daughter Sadie

Christina Applegate is opening up about the most painful part of living with multiple sclerosis, and it’s watching how it affects her daughter, Sadie. On Tuesday’s episode of her “MesSy” podcast, the 53-year-old actress candidly admitted that her ongoing health struggles have been especially hard on the 14-year-old, calling the impact “heartbreaking.”

“I see her look at me when I’m in bed and can’t quite move, or I wanna go say goodnight to her in her room, but I can’t quite get down the hallway for whatever reason that my legs aren’t working that day,” Applegate shared. “Right now I can barely get to bathroom, it’s the worst, but that’s neither here nor there. It’s broken her.”

Applegate reflected on how life looked before her 2021 MS diagnosis. “She only knew me as healthy, and a runner, and a Pelotoner and a dancer,” she explained.

When her illness emerged, the shift was dramatic. “She didn’t know this. It was like losing the mom she had to this f–king thing. And the more she’s gotten older now, I think the more it’s hurting her,” she said.

The star also noted the timing made things even harder. “We had just gone through COVID and no school and all this stuff and now mommy can’t do all the things that she used to be able to do and I see it in her eyes. I see it.”

Despite the painful reality, Applegate said Sadie continues to show up for her with a lot of resilience and love.

“When we’re out, she knows I’m having such a hard time because I have such anxiety about being out. And she’s always got my arm,” she revealed. “She’s always trying to help me through and help me with my cane and all this stuff. At home, she’s like, ‘Can you please go down and make my food cause you’re the only one who can make it?’”

The actress said those small gestures mean everything as she navigates her toughest days.

Applegate’s Ongoing Health Struggles

Since publicly announcing her MS diagnosis in August 2021, the “Dead to Me” star has remained open about her health journey on her podcast with Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

Earlier this month, Applegate revealed she was hospitalized with severe pain. On the August 5 episode of “MesSy,” which she recorded from her hospital bed in Los Angeles, she told listeners she had an infection in both kidneys. “It was so much pain that I was screaming,” she admitted.

While the battle continues, Applegate said she is grateful to have her daughter by her side through it all.
