Movie fans have come up with a new conspiracy theory about Tom Cruise’s upcoming film Digger.

The internet has become convinced that the new Alejandro G. Iñárritu film is secretly a musical and that the filmmakers are doing everything they can to hide it from the public.

Posted on social media, X user Jason said: ‘My favorite conspiracy theory right now is that Digger is secretly a musical and they’re desperately trying to hide it in the marketing.’

Sharing a mashed-up clip of every moment from the trailer that appears to prove that it is a musical, the theory has sent fans down an elaborate rabbit hole.

Reacting on X, one user named Nicole said: ‘I hope not, or I might just skip watching it.’

Another user called Reid questioned: ‘Is this all because someone pointed out they looked like they were singing in the background of the Cruise carousel shot?’

Samuel even joked: ‘Tom comes out as a singer at sixty?’ as Jacob implored: ‘I WANT THIS TO BE THE CASE SO BAD!!!!!!!!!’

Hank, meanwhile, argued: ‘If they’re worried about people finding out that the movie is a musical, why make the movie a musical in the first place?’

At one particular moment inside an auditorium, people have started to notice how the background actors all have their mouths open, seemingly because they are singing.

Digger stars Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a hugely powerful man who sets out to prove he can save humanity after causing a global catastrophe.

The film is being directed by The Revenant and Birdman filmmaker Iñárritu and has already attracted plenty of attention thanks to Cruise’s bizarre transformation for the role.

The trailers and promotional material have offered glimpses of a strange, surreal comedy, while revealing remarkably little about what audiences can actually expect from the finished film.

There is currently no evidence that Digger is a musical, with the film – which is set to hit cinemas on October 9 – officially described as a comedy and satire.

But the idea has clearly struck a chord online, with fans picking apart the film’s trailers and promotional campaign for clues.

Cruise plays a billionaire whose attempt to save the world follows a catastrophe he himself helped unleash, with the film also starring Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed and John Goodman.

The latest trailer has shown off a much more comedic side to the film, with Cruise appearing almost unrecognisable.
