Control Resonant unveiled as the next game in the Alan Wake multiverse

Remedy has released the first trailer for Control 2 at The Game Awards and it’s looking to outdo the original by having the best Force powers in video games.

We didn’t like Alan Wake 2 nearly as much as some people, but then we’ve always felt Finnish developer Remedy’s real talent lies in gameplay rather than storytelling.

They don’t seem to agree, especially given how the action in Alan Wake 2 was somehow worse than the first game, but that’s why we’ve always considered Control to be their best game. It’s a great third person actioner, with the best representation of Force-like telekinetic powers ever seen in a video game.

A sequel was announced four years ago but nothing has been seen of it until The Game Awards on Friday morning, when it was revealed that it’s called Control Resonant and will have you playing as Dylan Faden, brother of Jesse from the first game.

We don’t want to spoiltwhat happened in the original, but it seems as if Jesse will be in the game as well, but while her brother has similar powers they do appear to work in different ways.

In the trailer below you can see him making weapons on the fly, by pulling objects towards him and crafting them, almost a bit like Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom. We’re sure he has other powers too, but so far Remedy is keeping things close to their chest.

‘Deliver bone-crunching blows with a two-handed hammer and flow seamlessly into the swift precision of dual-wielded blades as this supernatural weapon morphs on demand to meet each new challenge that Dylan will face,’ is all they’ve said about the combat.

Other than the protagonist, the main change to the game seems to be that the action takes place outside, in New York City, rather than just inside the FDC (Federal Bureau of Control) headquarters.

According to Remedy that means you must ‘explore the expansive zones of a city overrun by the corrupting influences of the chaotic Hiss and invasive micro-organism, the Mold, and other twisted paranatural threats.’

We do hope the latter means that there’s more than just possessed humans as enemies, as relying solely on humanoid enemies has been a persistent flaw with both Control and Alan Wake.

Speaking of which, it’s probably a given that he’ll make an appearance of some sort in the game, since Alan Wake 2 went out of its way to make it clear that both franchises take place in the same universe.

Control Resonant will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (including on Steam, this time) sometime in 2026.
