In a brief but heartfelt acceptance speech, Johnson charmed the crowd by thanking them in Czech. She then praised her Materialists director: “Celine Song is probably the best filmmaker of our time,” she said to roaring applause.

She graciously accepted the honor just before the screening of her latest release, “Materialists”, written and directed by Celine Song and co-starring Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans.

Earlier Saturday, she also premiered the romantic comedy Splitsville, directed by Michael Angelo Covino, which she produced through her company TeaTime Pictures. Johnson co-founded the banner with producing partner Ro Donnelly in 2019.

“I hope these are films that ignite fire in people’s hearts and minds about love and how we treat each other and what we want for ourselves,” she told the press on Sunday ahead of the screening, as per Hollywood Reporter.

Dakota Teases Directorial Debut and Female-Driven Future

During a media appearance earlier in the day, Johnson opened up about her career aspirations — and what’s next. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she revealed that she’s likely to direct her first feature soon and remains committed to telling female-centric stories through TeaTime Pictures.

She also noted that she wants to create healthy, respectful film sets and is more interested in making an impact than in achieving box office returns. “I want to avoid toxic sets,” she said. “I measure the success of a movie in how it affects people.” As for dream roles? She’s still got one in mind. “I would love to play a psychopath,” she told reporters with a smile.

Grateful for the Moment: “This Looks Like Disneyland”

Beyond the spotlight, Johnson made it clear just how much the experience at KVIFF meant to her.

“And I just couldn’t feel more grateful.”
