Dave and Jenny Marrs of ‘Fixer to Fabulous’ Open Up About Christmas Traditions, Balancing Work and Family Life [Interview]

The Fixer to Fabulous couple are back on HGTV with a new season of their renovation series, which follows them as they transform the homes of deserving families. In the December 2 season premiere, they renovate a tornado-ravaged house for their child’s preschool teacher, providing a space that is both beautiful and offers peace of mind. (Yes, there’s a storm shelter.)

“Ms. Ketner, she was our son Luke’s preschool teacher, and they went through a really devastating tornado,” Dave said in an interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “So to be with them the day following the tornado and see the damage and the destruction, and then to really come full circle with being able to get the opportunity to renovate their house and make it a safe space again, a space that they fits their family and really that they feel comfortable in again, it was really powerful.”

That kind of life-changing renovation is par for the course for the Arkansas-based pair, who have built their brand around creating meaningful spaces where families can build lasting memories. So, it’s no surprise that they bring that same intentionality to their holiday celebrations with their five children.

When it comes to holiday decorating, Jenny Marrs adheres to a traditional timeline. While some people might start decking the halls in early November, she typically waits until after Turkey Day to start getting into the Christmas spirit. (She did make an exception this year, with the family deciding they needed some early holiday cheer, she confessed on Instagram,.)

“We have all the traditions,” she said. “We have Thanksgiving at my sister’s and then after we always go get our tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. I know people are setting up early, but I’m an after Thanksgiving person … We decorate it together. Mostly the kids decorate it. [It’s] not a big fancy tree. I let the kids do it. They love it. And we have lots of memorable ornaments that we just have fun going through.”

While the tree might not look picture-perfect, that’s exactly what makes it special, Dave says.

“We have lots of pieces of paper that have some random coloring with a yarn piece of yarn tying them together,” Davie said. “And it’s OK. It’s a season of life. We’ve got a very Charlie Brown Christmas tree, but it’s wonderful,”

The Marrs’ approach to holidays reflects their broader philosophy of structuring their professional lives around their family’s needs.

“Since the moment we started this show, our kids and our family is first. They come before anything else,” Dave explained.

When filming Fixer to Fabulous, family obligations take precedence, not the other way around.

“If there’s a basketball game that we need to go to, we’re going to that,” he said. “We’re not going to miss that. It’s important. And if we’ve got to film later or earlier because of it, we have a wonderful company that works with us and is flexible.”

Still, keeping everything running smoothly can be a challenge.

“I tell you, it’s a struggle all the time,” Dave said. “I don’t feel like we’re any different than any other parent out there who’s just trying to figure it out.”

“It’s a lot of calendar management,” added Jenny, who handles the logistics of managing five children’s schedules while running a television show and renovation business. That means dealing with “apps for the different sports and then all the emails from all the teachers and then all the events. And you know, you’re getting into the holiday season when everybody has a party or this or that.”

To keep it all straight she relies on an old-fashioned paper calendar where she “can see it all laid out.”

“I do love a good calendar,” she said.

Dave and Jenny Marrs’ kids will ‘make their own path,’ he says

Will any of the five Marrs kids follow their parents into the family business? With their oldest two still in their mid-teens, it’s too early to say. But it’s a definite possibility.

“One of our twins, he, I think, could go into architecture. It’s what my dad does, and I could see him going into that,” Dave said. “He has that sort of that brain and he loves drawing, and I could see that. I could see Nathan maybe going into the trades. They don’t really know what they want to do yet.”

Meanwhile, one of their daughters is dreaming of playing in the WNBA, while another wants to be a vet. But what they ultimately choose to do with their lives is up to them.

“They’re going to make their own path,” Dave said. “Getting them out in the shop and getting them underneath a car to work on or to change a tire, that’s important to me that they know how, but whether or not they choose it, that’s up to them.”

Fixer to Fabulous premieres Tuesday, December 2, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV
