Denzel Washington’s New Movie Debuts with Strong Reviews From Critics

Denzel Washington Spike Lee Highest 2 Lowest

Denzel Washington is one of the most acclaimed actors working today. This is the case not only on film, but also on stage, as he just finished a successful Broadway run of “Othello.” Now, he has a new movie, “Highest 2 Lowest,” coming to theatres, and the Spike Lee-directed flick has debuted with impressive reviews from critics.

Washington’s new movie releases in theaters on August 15 from Apple Studios and A24. It co-stars Jeffery Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, and A$AP Rocky. Notably, this is a modern reinterpretation of a 1963 film, “High and Low.” Categorized as a crime thriller, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

Critics Love Washington and Lee’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’

Not only is Washington a beloved actor, but Lee is an acclaimed director. As a result, it’s no surprise that the “Highest 2 Lowest” movie has such high early reviews from critics. So far, it has an impressive 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which gives it the “certified fresh” label. As of writing, it has 45 reviews.

Roger Friedman wrote, “Denzel: he’s one name now. He can do no wrong. Even with Jeffrey Wright seriously trying to pull attention as the second banana, Denzel knows to pay out his charms slowly. By the time he builds to a crescendo, you see what greatness on film can be.”

Joey Magidson reviewed the film and said, “Highest 2 Lowest is a New York City love letter from Spike Lee that also reunites him with Denzel Washington.” Jeff Ewing stated, “Highest 2 Lowest is another visionary turn from Spike Lee, with a lot to say amidst excellent performances from Denzel and Jeffrey Wright. It feels less focused at the end, but it’s still an exceptional example of Spike Lee’s talents.”

David Gonzalez said, “Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest is more remix than remake, a slick, sharp thriller fueled by tension, wit, and moral ambiguity. Lee blends gripping suspense with his signature cinematic flair, delivering a film that pulses with urgency and swagger.”

In a negative review of Washington’s new movie, Alex Billington wrote, “Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest is more remix than remake, a slick, sharp thriller fueled by tension, wit, and moral ambiguity. Lee blends gripping suspense with his signature cinematic flair, delivering a film that pulses with urgency and swagger.”

The Director and Actor Duo May Work Together Again

Lee previously said that “Highest 2 Lowest” would be his final film with Washington. This came as he stated that them doing five films together would be enough. However, he has now changed his stance. He spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “I said that before, but I got my mind right.”

Lee continued, “I’m open to work with Denzel Washington, and this [may] not be the last film of the dynamic duo, D and Lee.”
