Diane Keaton on Her Fierce Choice to Stay Single & Become a Mom in Her 50s

Was Diane Keaton married or had kids? Details

Diane Keaton had plenty of high-profile romances, but marriage was never part of her plan. The Oscar-winning actress, who passed away at 79, spoke openly about her independence and unconventional choices in love and life. “Today I was thinking about this,” she told People in 2019. “I’m 73 and I think I’m the only one in my generation, and maybe before, who has been a single woman all her life.”

Despite long-term relationships with Al Pacino, Warren Beatty, and Woody Allen, Keaton said she never saw herself as a wife. “It would not have been a good idea for me to have married,” she said. “I’m really glad I didn’t, and I’m sure they’re happy about it, too.”

Keaton’s decision not to marry was something she understood early on. “I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife,’” she recalled. “And I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a wife. No.’”

Even in her later years, the actress stood by her choice to stay single. “I don’t date,” she told AARP The Magazine in 2023. She explained that it was “highly unlikely” she would ever pursue another relationship. “I don’t remember anyone calling me, going, ‘This is So-and-So, I’d like to take you out.’ They don’t happen. Of course not.”

While marriage never appealed to her, motherhood eventually did. Keaton adopted two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke, in her 50s.

“I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother,” she told Ladies’ Home Journal, as reported by People. “Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist. It was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”

Both of her children have largely stayed out of the spotlight, occasionally joining their mother for career milestones. “They have no interest in what I do, which I think is very healthy,” she once said with a smile.

A Hollywood Legend Who Lived Life Her Way

Born in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton built one of Hollywood’s most respected careers with films like “The Godfather,” “Annie Hall,” “Baby Boom,” and “Something’s Gotta Give.” Her wit, honesty, and charm made her an icon both on and off screen.

Before her passing on October 11 at age 79, Keaton reflected often on her independence and her joy in being a mother later in life. “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness,” a family spokesperson told People.

She never followed convention, and in doing so, she inspired generations of women to live authentically.
