“First Mother’s Day without you. I miss you more than words can say,” Dexter wrote, sharing three photos of herself with her mother.

She continued: “Missing her voice, her hugs, her presence, and everything that made her home. I love you, mom.”

Fans flooded the comments with messages of love, sympathy, and support, honoring Keaton’s legacy while offering comfort to her family as they navigate life without her.

How Diane Keaton’s Daughter Has Been Honoring Her Mom Since Her Passing

The Mother’s Day post was not the first time Dexter had found a way to keep her mother close. On January 5, what would have been Keaton’s 80th birthday, Dexter shared a throwback photo and revealed a tattoo she had gotten in her mother’s memory.

“I miss you, Mom,” she wrote. “Thank you, @winterstone, for my forever reminder of my wonderful mom.”

She also shared a black-and-white polka-dotted manicure on her Instagram Stories, a quiet and touching nod to Keaton’s iconic personal style. “Happy heavenly birthday, momma,” she wrote.

Over the years, Dexter, who largely lives out of the spotlight, often shared glimpses of her life with Keaton on Instagram. Trips together. Everyday moments. Her own wedding day. A relationship built on love, gratitude, and deep mutual admiration.

Marriage was never part of Keaton’s story. Motherhood was. She adopted Dexter in 1996 and son Duke, now 25, in 2001, building a family that became the center of her world. She was thoughtful about the decision, taking her time before she felt truly ready.

“I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother,” she told Home Journal, excerpted by TODAY. “Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist. It was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”

Dexter has always understood the gift that decision was.

In a 2014 Mother’s Day post, she wrote: “I’m so thankful to have been adopted by such a strong, beautiful, and talented woman. I couldn’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for me. I love you!”

This Mother’s Day, the words were simpler. The feeling behind them was the same.

Keaton passed away from pneumonia on October 11 in California. She was 79 years old. The Keaton family confirmed her cause of passing in a statement to People.

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the family said.
