Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton is adding another major honor to her legendary career, landing among the greatest living songwriters ever.

The recognition comes from The New York Times’ latest list celebrating the greatest living songwriters, which highlights artists whose work has shaped generations. For Dolly Parton, it’s yet another reminder of just how far her storytelling and influence continue to reach across genres and decades.

Dolly Parton Honored For Her Extraordinary Songwriting Skills

Country superstar Dolly Parton was honored by the New York Times for her extraordinary songwriting skills. The publication listed her among other honorees on a list of 30 of the Greatest American Songwriters Alive.

Parton was heralded for her attention to detail and prolific ability to craft timeless songs that span generations. The New York Times said of her extraordinary abilities, “To anyone with a true understanding of Parton’s songwriting — or perhaps of the miracle of songwriting itself — not particularly surprising. As is true for so many of the greats, songwriting is, for Parton, a kind of spiritual practice.”

“Parton has cultivated a reputation for being down-to-earth while also seeming connected to some kind of higher power,” the outlet wrote. They cited her friend and collaborator, Emmylou Harris, who said, “I’ve watched Dolly writing one song while she’s singing another. I’ve never seen anyone so spontaneously creative.”

Other music luminaries listed alongside Parton include Carole King, Nile Rodgers, Lucinda Williams, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Paul Simon, and Taylor Swift. Other songwriters on the NYT list include Brian and Eddie Holland, Missy Elliot, Lionel Richie, Yung Thug and Diane Warren.

Josh Osborne, Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally, Fiona Apple, Babyface, Stephin Merritt, Romeo Santos, Outkast, Mariah Carey, Willie Nelson, Kendrick Lamar, Valerie Simpson, Bob Dylan, Lana Del Rey, The-Dream, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Bad Bunny, Bruce Springsteen, and Smokey Robinson round out the list.

Dolly Parton Admits She ‘Writes All The Time’

In an interview published by AXS-TV, Dolly Parton shared her songwriting strategy.

She explained, “I write all the time, and I have been writing since I was a little kid.”

“I started playing guitar when I was seven years old,” Parton continued. “I have been writing serious songs ever since.”

At the time of the interview, Parton said she had published “hundreds” of songs. “Every drawer, every box, in my basement. I go in my drawer to get some drawers, and I find a song in there!”

She concluded, “It’s my therapy. It’s my job and joy, like a poet. Everything is just a song to me. Anything that happens, any conversation I have. Somebody will say something and I will say, ‘That’s a good idea for a song.’”

According to a 2022 post by the Grammy website, Parton has written close to 3,000 songs throughout her career. Of those tunes, at that time, over 450 were recorded.

Many of Parton’s songs were recorded by other artists. The most famous was “I Will Always Love You.” Whitney Houston took that tune to the top of the Billboard charts in February 1991, where it stayed at No. 1 for a remarkable 14 weeks.

Additionally, she has also penned songs for Kenny Rogers, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Jennifer Nettles, Hank Williams, Jr., Tina Turner, Skeeter Davis, and Bill Phillips.
