‘Downton Abbey’ Fans Fear the Worst in Final Movie: Will the Crawleys Lose the Estate?

Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville for "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale"

Following the messy highs and heartbreaking lows of the Crawley family, their staff, and that iconic sprawling estate, “Downton Abbey” has been the go-to period drama for over a decade now. After a six season series, airing from 2010 to 2015, and two films (“Downton Abbey” and “Downton Abbey: A New Era”) already under its belt, the Crawleys story is about to wrap up for good.

That Trailer Isn’t Helping Anyone Sleep at Night

According to Deadline, “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” is the third and final film in the franchise, with series creator Julian Fellowes officially closing the curtain on the story. And while the movie doesn’t hit theaters until September 12, 2025, fans have been spiraling ever since the trailer dropped; and they haven’t calmed down since.

The teaser (seen below) didn’t just give us sweeping shots and classic period drama vibes. It gave us Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) literally kissing the estate goodbye, and hinted at Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) trying to follow the Dowager Countess’ footsteps as the new head of the family. If that’s not foreshadowing, we don’t know what is.

With World War II creeping into the timeline and Dowager Countess Violet Crawley gone (R.I.P. Dame Maggie Smith), the Crawleys keeping Downton afloat feels less and less realistic. Longtime fans know the show has always centered around preserving the house; emotionally, financially, and socially. So yeah, the idea that we might watch them lose it? That’s a punch to the gut.

The trailer’s tagline, “the end of an era,” didn’t exactly help settle any nerves. If anything, it’s fueling the theory that this goodbye might be more than just metaphorical.

Reddit’s Already in Mourning

Fans on Reddit aren’t holding back their feelings; and honestly, who can blame them? “Well this makes me a bit scared they will lose the house…” one person admitted. Even as another person echoed the sentiment.

Some are worried this is a slow-motion farewell they’re not ready to accept. “I’m sure it’s a purposeful teaser but I’m anxious that means they’ll lose the Abbey,” said one fan. “It’s been a fight for them since the start I know, but I guess losing the Abbey would be ‘it’ in a sense… I guess we can only wait and see!!”

Others are holding onto hope that the Crawleys (and the estate) end things on a high note.

And then there’s one fan pitch we’re kind of obsessed with: “What if the last scene is young George signing up for the war effort in 1939 and Lady Mary welcomes the first guests to Downton Abbey Hotel!” Now that’s an ending.

Whether the Crawleys keep Downton or not, this finale promises to hit all the emotional notes we’ve been waiting for… and then some. One thing’s for sure: no matter how it ends, the legacy of “Downton Abbey” will stick with fans for a long time.

“Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” hits theaters on September 12, 2025.
