Actor and talk show host Drew Barrymore is opening up about how she deals with the stress of parenting her two children. Barrymore got candid in an interview with Real Simple when speaking about the overwhelm of balancing work and family.
“When I get burnout from trying to mom really hard and work really hard, I go, ‘You know what? This isnât good.’” she explained. “And I know that at the end of the day, the most important thing in life is your relationships. If Iâm not putting them first, then Iâm on the wrong track.”
Barrymore shares two daughters, Olive, 12, and Frankie, 11, with ex-husband Will Kopelman, and she communicates openly with them.
“I do try to show them that the more you work on yourself, the happier youâre going to be, the more your friendships will thrive. We all need tools to navigate the world, and asking for help is everything,” she shared.
Drew Barrymore Puts an Emphasis on Kindness
For Barrymore, it’s been important to teach her children why kindness matters. “If youâre not good to someone, you will not only ruin their day, but guess what: Youâre going to feel really bad about yourself. So nix that behavior,” the TV host said.
But she also admitted that learning to be kind to herself has been a challenge. “I donât know if Iâve got that one down yet,” Barrymore confessed, adding, “Weâre all works in progress.”
It appears that Barrymore is dedicated to figuring it out, however. In July the “Never Been Kissed” actor posted an Instagram reel with a very sweet and poignant message.
The video shows Barrymore in her bathroom mirror putting on makeup. The text on top reads, “Why do you want to be kinder to yourself?” The video shifts to a clip of Barrymore as a young child and the the response to her question reads, “She deserves that.”
Barrymore captioned the post, “If I wouldnât say it to my younger self, I really am trying my very best not to say it.â¤ï¸”
Why Barrymore Likes to Keep Her Space Neat
During her interview with Real Simple, the “Charlie’s Angels” actor explained that she likes to keep her home tidy because it correlates to her well-being. “Your head is as messy as your room is. Someone said that to me, and it changed my life forever,” Barrymore revealed.
But getting her daughters on the same wavelength has been a bit of a challenge. “I have one daughter whoâs neater than I will ever be, and one daughter who is beyond messy,” Barrymore said.
