Bella Murphy is stepping into her own spotlight, but sheâs still holding onto the advice that helped guide her from the very beginning.
The 24-year-old actress is currently starring in Netflixâs âRoommates,â marking her first major feature film without her father, Eddie Murphy. While the project represents a new chapter for Bella, she made it clear that her dadâs influence is still very much a part of her process.
âHeâs definitely given me lots of great tips over the years,â Bella told People. One piece of advice, in particular, has stuck with her: âdoing less is more.â She said that approach has helped her performances feel more natural, allowing her to slow down, âtake my time moreâ and let moments unfold organically.
Now, as she builds her own career, Bella is finding that those simple notes are making a real impact on how she shows up on screen.
Eddie Murphyâs Rule Kept Bella Grounded Early On
Before Bella ever stepped onto a set professionally, there was one major rule she had to follow.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Eddie Murphy didnât allow any of his children to act or work in the industry until they turned 18. Bella admitted she used to beg to be involved in his projects, but he always shut it down. âBecause we have a rule that we canât act or work until weâre 18 in this industry,â she said, adding that he âreally wanted me to have a normal childhood.â
Looking back, Bella says she appreciates that decision. Even though it kept her from starting early, it actually made her more focused. âThat kind of made me even more obsessed with it,â she explained, noting that by the time she was allowed to pursue acting, she wanted to be fully prepared.
Her interest in acting started young. Bella said that by age 9, she already knew what she wanted to do. âI definitely want to do this,â she recalled, crediting her dadâs work as a major inspiration after spending time visiting him on set.
When she finally got her opportunity, she didnât skip the process. Bella made her film debut in âComing 2 America,â but still had to audition like everyone else. Eddie Murphy later confirmed he didnât push to get her cast, making sure she earned the role on her own.
Finding Her Own Voice on âRoommatesâ
With âRoommates,â Bella is continuing to figure out who she is as an actress, separate from her famous last name.
According to People, she admitted she felt nervous when she first arrived on set, especially since it was her first major studio project without her dad. âI was like, âHow do I do that? What do I do?ââ she said, recalling those early moments of uncertainty.
She eventually found her footing by leaning into the character, who she said felt close to her real personality. That made it easier to relax and trust herself, something she now sees as one of the biggest lessons from the experience.
Bella also said working with her co-stars helped ease those nerves. She quickly bonded with Sadie Sandler, Chloe East and Jaya Harper, describing a supportive environment where everyone felt comfortable being honest about how they were feeling. âIt felt like we were all there for each other,â she said.
That connection didnât end when filming wrapped. The group still keeps in touch, even using a group chat to talk about everything from the movie to what they were wearing for the premiere.
Beyond the friendships, Bella said the project helped shift her mindset. Sheâs now approaching auditions differently, seeing them as âgrowth opportunitiesâ instead of something to stress over.
At the same time, sheâs continuing to lean on the foundation her dad helped build. Between his advice and the structure he put in place early on, Bella is moving forward with a clearer sense of who she is as an actress.
âHeâs given me such great advice on so many things, itâs hard to pin down one.â
