Elton John Reveals He “Can’t See” His Sons Play Due to Sight Loss

Elton John

Sir Elton John opened up about his ongoing struggles with an eye infection that has limited the singer’s vision in one eye, as well as commenting on how the affliction has effected his relationship with his sons.

”I Can’t See My Boys Playing Rugby,” John Says

Speaking to the British Newspaper The Times, the 78-year-old musician opened up about the “severe” eye infection, claiming that it has resulted in significant vision loss since the Summer of 2024. He similarly expressed that the condition has affected his ability to share in special moments with his two sons, Zachary and Elijah.

“I can’t read. I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time, because I’m used to soaking it all up. It’s distressing,” said John. The “Rocket Man” singer and his filmmaker husband, David Furnish, welcomed their elder son, Zachary (14), in 2010 via surrogate before Elijah (12) joined the family in 2013 from the same surrogate.

“You get emotional, but you have to get used to it, because I’m lucky to have the life I have,” he continued. “I still have my wonderful family and I can still see something out of here.”

John Celebrates New Album Release in Spite of Health Concerns

Despite his ongoing health struggles, John is still working in the music world, debuting his most recent project, a collaborative album with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile titled “Who Believes in Angels” on Friday, April 4, 2025.

The duo appeared as musical guests on “Saturday Night Live” on April 5 to perform two songs from the freshly-debuted record, including the title track “Who Believes in Angels” and “Little Richard’s Bible.”

During an appearance on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon ahead of the album’s release, John recalled how he and Carlile came to meet and collaborate, saying it was all thanks to a letter he received from Carlile nearly 20 years ago during his Las Vegas residency.

“She wrote me a letter and explained that she’d been a fan of mine ever since she was a kid and I was the reason she wanted to make music,” John revealed.

Carlile’s letter similarly invited John to collaborate on one of her tracks. John remembered calling Carlile after reading the letter and inviting her out to visit him in Las Vegas.

“The minute she arrived in the studio, I fell in love with her and I fell in love with her talent, her voice. But more than that, I fell in love with the person. And we’ve become firm friends. We’re like family,” John added.

“Who Believes in Angels” marks John’s fifth collaborative album, following after 2020’s “The Lockdown Sessions” which featured tracks with artists like Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Charlie Puth, and more.
