In what could be the most mortifying celebrity singalong since the pandemic Imagine, stars lent their voices to a rendition of Wonderwall.

Released by the BBC ahead of that England match, it was swiftly removed, and the website now shows an error message when you try to access the video.

Unfortunately for our ears, the Celebrity World Cup Wonderwall broke the broadcaster’s attempts at containment as CTNI88 (aka Chris) shared it on X.

‘I can’t put into words how angry I am at this,’ he captioned the video, and it seems his feelings have been echoed by fans everywhere.

It starts fairly innocuously as Micah Richards walks through a door to belt those first lines, then it cuts to Ross Kemp in his dribble-free England shirt.

The track starts to take a turn as Claudia Winkleman offers a spoken word section while Greg James goes all in for a Liam Gallagher impression – which proves to be one of several.

Even David Baddiel joined in, with a cheeky nod to the ultimate England anthem, Three Lions, which he sang with Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds in the 90s.

The list of British celebs continues to get more baffling as Maya Jama, Jon Kay, Stephen Fry, Lee Mack, Michael McIntyre, Miranda Hart, Emma Raducanu and even Clive Myrie get involved.

Notably, the Gallagher brothers didn’t join in.

Unfortunately, instead of a rallying moment for English football, the version is being blamed for the semi-final fumble against Argentina.

‘Fully deserved to go out for this alone. Fair play 👍,’ said NotThatHughes on X, as LucaHelvetica agreed: ‘Deserved to lose just for this.’

‘This is why England lost,’ echoed Jason Reid while AliceHarperGC added: ‘Ok we definitely deserved to lose, the universe does not let things this bad go unpunished 😬.’

Fans declared it was ‘worse than Imagine’ (Picture: BBC/X)

Comparisons to the infamous celebrity cover of John Lennon’s Imagine were flying, with many calling it ‘worse’ than that slated Covid rendition.

‘Cringe-inducing’ was a phrase thrown around while PootballFundit branded it ‘absolute car crash content’.

It’s no surprise the celebs jumped at the chance to sing along to Oasis’ iconic track as it became England’s anthem of choice after the track was played over the stadium speakers to celebrate the team’s 4-2 win over Croatia.

The crowd gave a roaring rendition at the AT&T Stadium last month after England won thanks to a double from Harry Kane, plus goals from Bellingham and Marcus Rashford.

Even Jude Bellingham couldn’t resist singing along as he stood on the pitch, with Kane appearing to get emotional over the moment.

Noel Gallagher told The Sun at the time: ‘Wonderwall belongs to the people, and it was a magical moment between the people and the players.’

The popularity of Wonderwall seems to continue to surprise and amuse the brothers, especially as the now 30-year-old track never actually hit number one.

In 1995, the song peaked at number two in the UK and has managed to sneak back into the top 100 several times since then.

Funnily enough, Liam once compared Wonderwall to Lennon’s Imagine, existing in a space where it is both universally loved and hated at the same time.

He told Rolling Stone in 2020: ‘People love it and people hate it. I’m not comparing it to Imagine, but a lot of people say, “Imagine — f**k that,” but some people say it’s one of the best songs around.’

Clearly, fans still love the song but maybe not when it’s sung slightly out of tune by 26 different celebrities.
