It’s now been just over three months since Brooklyn Beckham launched a brutal takedown of his parents David and Victoria Beckham.
In January the eldest son of the former footballer and Spice Girls star finally responded to rumours that there had been an almighty rift in the family that had been brewing for years.
After there was first speculation in 2022 there had been a fallout around the time of his wedding to Nicola Peltz, Brooklyn and his wife largely put on a united front with his family – but last year started to distance themselves.
The couple were noticeably absent from milestone family events, including celebrations for David’s 50th birthday and his knighthood ceremony. Meanwhile none of the Beckham’s were also invited to Brooklyn and Nicola’s vow renewal ceremony last summer.
Although both sides stayed tight lipped for months on what was happening, in January Brooklyn drooped his bombshell statement on social media, accusing his parents of ‘controlling’ him and declaring that he now was ‘standing up’ for himself and did ‘not want to reconcile’ with them.
Despite David and Victoria largely choosing to avoid speaking publicly about the ongoing dispute with their son, this week she finally spoke out – but refused to say her eldest child’s name. As the Beckham fallout continues, here’s everything the family has said in the past few months.
What has Brooklyn Beckham said about his parents?
After intense speculation regarding Brooklyn’s relationship with his parents, he dropped a lengthy statement on Instagram in January.
He began it by declaring: ‘I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private. Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.’
‘I do not want to reconcile with my family. I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.’
Brooklyn then went on to accuse his parents of ‘controlling narratives in the press’ about the family, adding that ‘performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into’.
‘Recently, I have seen with my own eyes the lengths that they’ll go through to place countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their own facade. But I believe the truth always comes out.’
He then claimed they’d been ‘endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding’, before making the headline-grabbing claim about his mum ‘dancing inappropriately’ on him during what was meant to be the first dance with his new wife.
Brooklyn also took aim at his brothers Romeo and Cruz – saying they ‘attacked’ him on social media before blocking him ‘out of nowhere’.
Taking another dig at his family, he said they ‘valued public promotion and endorsements above all else’, with love ‘decided by how much you post on social media, or how quickly you drop everything to show up and pose for a family photo opp, even if it’s at the expense of our professional obligations’.
Wrapping up his statement Brooklyn said that since stepping away from his family his anxiety had ‘disappeared’ and he now woke up each day ‘grateful’ and now felt ‘peace and relief’.
Although he’s not said anything else about his family publicly since – Brooklyn and Nicola have made several pointed digs at his parents, snubbing them on birthdays and ignoring posts reaching out to them on milestone events too.
How have David and Victoria responded?
After waiting months to publicly address her son’s brutal claims against her and David, this week Victoria finally addressed it for the first time.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Victoria shared: ‘I think that we’ve always – we love our children so much. We’ve always tried to be the best parents that we can be.’
‘And you know, we’ve been in the public eye for more than 30 years right now, and all we’ve ever tried to do is protect our children and love our children. And you know, that’s all I really want to say about it.’
She apparently did ‘not reply with his name’ but responded when asked if she felt guilt or remorse for bringing her children into the spotlight at such an early age.
All of the four Beckham children– Brooklyn, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 21, and Harper, 14 – have spent much of their childhoods chased by paparazzi and shared on social media.
Victoria went on: ‘I wouldn’t say it comes with guilt; I’d say that there was a lot of adjusting from my mum and dad, when all of a sudden there were paparazzi outside their house.
‘We’ve really taken our families on this ride with us.’
A few days after Brooklyn’s statement dropped, David alluded to the family challenges, but without naming his son directly too.
During a live interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box, he shared: ‘I’ve always spoken about social media and the power of social media – for the good and for the bad.
‘They make mistakes. Children are allowed to make mistakes. That’s how they learn. So, that’s what I try to teach my kids, but you have to sometimes let them make those mistakes as well.’
Have other family members weighed in on the feud?
While Brooklyn’s brothers have made pointed digs at him on social media, they’ve largely avoided speaking about the rift in the family.
However, one person who wasn’t afraid to hold back was Nicola’s father – billionaire businessman Nelson Peltz.
Appearing on stage during the Wall Street Journal Invest Live event In February, the 83-year-old was asked about the ongoing family drama.
The subject was broached by a reporter who linked his experience with ‘negotiating high-stakes situations, particularly playing out in public view’ to the public attention his daughter and her husband have recently faced.
‘Has my family been in the press lately? I haven’t noticed that at all,’ he cheekily quipped.
But after being asked if he’s offered his family any advice on navigating ‘such situations’, he replied: ‘I do. My advice is to stay the hell out of the press. How much good did that do?’
He continued: ‘My daughter and the Beckhams are a whole other story. That’s not for coverage here today, but I’ll tell you my daughter’s great, my son-in-law, Brooklyn, is great, and I look forward to them having a long, happy marriage together.’
