A twisty political thriller has been added to Channel 4, providing eight episodes of ‘exceptional’ drama.

The Slovak series is part of the Walter Presents streaming collection on Channel 4, which features an array of award-winning world dramas.

It was launched in 2016 and brings viewers recommendations for some seriously binge-worthy TV.

A recent addition is Ultimatum, a high-stakes eight-parter about a ‘kidnapper with a personal and political demand’ who takes control of a hospital floor.

The streaming platform explains: ‘Negotiator Dano’s partner [Lenka] is a hostage. And the stakes keep getting higher…’

To make matters worse, Lenka is pregnant and not well. The country’s minister of defence has also been targeted, while a political summit of European leaders takes place nearby.

The gripping series comprises of eight episodes and each one is around an hour (Picture: Channel 4)

We learn that the kidnapper is a grieving former soldier, who is seeking answers about a military plane crash that killed his son.

Released in 2022, the series is directed by Michal Kollar and stars Czech and Slovak actors Ján Koleník, Milan Bahúl and Ester Geislerová.

On the website Česko-Slovenská filmová databáze, viewers have left their honest takes about the show.

Ostravak30 said: ‘By Czech and Slovak standards, Ultimatum is something exceptional.’

Amonasr gave it four stars and wrote: ‘A thrilling political thriller comparable to advanced Western productions and unfortunately realistically spiced with dirty political behind-the-scenes work at the highest levels, where rich corporations pull the strings.

‘Just like Western productions, it works with huge exaggeration in the actions of the characters and with a lot of barely believable action scenes and surprising twists.’

Some fans, however, think the series should be shorter (Picture: Channel 4)

Others, like stage.x, thought with each of the eight episodes being 60 minutes long, it could have been shorter. They admitted: ‘Four episodes would have been more bearable. I suffered like a beast from that drawn-out, overcombined boredom.’

Walter Presents recommends similarly gripping shows, including German crime drama Nordic Murders, Norweigan drama Ammo, and French mystery The Eclipse.

Coming up on the streamer is season 3 of supernatural Italian period drama Inspector Ricciardi, which will drop on Friday May 22.

Ultimatum is available to stream on Channel 4.
