
The racing world is continuing to mourn the shocking passing of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch after his family revealed the medical cause behind his sudden death at just 41 years old.
Buschâs Family Revealed He Passed from Pneumonia
On Saturday, May 23, Buschâs family confirmed that the two-time NASCAR champion died after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, causing what they described as ârapid and overwhelming associated complications.â
The heartbreaking update came two days after Buschâs passing on Thursday, May 21.
âKyle Busch died after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications,â the family shared in a statement released through Dakota Hunter, vice president of Kyle Busch Companies.
The family also requested privacy as they continue to grieve. âThe family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time.â
Busch Was Briefly Hospitalized
The news comes after Busch was hospitalized following what had initially been described as a severe illness.
One day before his death, the NASCAR icon reportedly passed out while using a Chevrolet racing simulator in North Carolina.
Earlier statements from the family indicated he would miss his scheduled activities at Charlotte Motor Speedway while receiving treatment.
âKyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization,â the Busch family previously shared. âHe is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation.â
Following the announcement, Richard Childress Racing confirmed that Austin Hill would step in for Busch in the No. 8 Chevrolet.
âKyle Buschâs health is our upmost priority and he and his family have the full resources of RCR behind them,â the organization shared. âKyle is an integral part of our organization and we wish him a safe and speedy recovery. His No. 8 Chevrolet will be ready and waiting for him. Weâre thankful to Austin Hill for stepping in to drive the No. 8 Chevrolet this weekend.â

Buschâs passing stunned fans and the motorsports community alike, especially given how recently he had still been competing.
The Family Recently Celebrated His Sonâs 11th Birthday
Just days before his death, the NASCAR champion had celebrated his son Brextonâs 11th birthday on social media, writing, âYour mom & I are so proud of who youâre turning out to be!â
Known for his fierce competitiveness and undeniable talent, Busch built one of the most successful careers in NASCAR history.
He captured Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019 and amassed hundreds of wins across NASCARâs national divisions, cementing his place as one of the sportâs all-time greats.
Busch is survived by his wife, Samantha Busch, and the coupleâs two children, Brexton and Lennix.
