Irish band Kodaline have announced their split after 10 years under their moniker, and after two decades performing together.
The County Dublin band, made up of friends Steve Garrigan, Vincent May, Mark Prendergast, and Jason Boland, shared the shock news with fans on social media today.
As fans shared their shock and sadness at the news, the band – known for hits including All I Want, Love Like This, and High Hopes – said they will record a fifth and final album before parting ways for good.
‘Hey everyone,’ Kodaline, who formed as childhood friends, began in an emotional video of them playing to crowds. ‘After over a decade together, we’ve made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Kodaline.
‘We know this may come as a surprise and it’s definitely bittersweet for us too. What we’ve shared with you has changed our lives forever.
‘From busking on the streets of Dublin, to playing shows across the world, it really has been the stuff that dreams are made of.
‘We want it to end on a high, so before we say goodbye we’re heading into the studio one last time to record our fifth and final album as Kodaline.’
The group said they will be ‘forever grateful’ for the ‘love and support’ fans have given throughout the years.
‘It’s been a journey that we’ll never forget and we hope the music stays with you long after we’re gone,’ they added.
Under the Instagram announcement, zy.w18 said: ‘One of my dreams was to see Kodaline live, can’t believe that chance is gone now.
‘Goodbye to the band that made us feel everything. Kodaline, thank you for the songs, the comfort, the emotions — you’ll always be special.’
Another fan said: ‘Kodaline is my favorite band. I’ve been listening to your songs since 2014. You have no idea how much your music has helped me through so many moments in my life.’
hayles1992 said: ‘This is sad. Feels like an end of an era for me and all my friends. Your music and gigs were such a huge part of our lives, and Summers especially.’
Even Jedward weighed into the comments section, as the twins said: ‘You can never fully say goodbye to Kodaline so we’ll see ya in the year 2030 something 🥹✨cause your to iconic not to come back and slay once again.’
Kodaline originally formed as 21 Demands, but changed their name in 2012 to adapt to their change in sound.
It was their debut studio album under their new moniker A Perfect World which saw them rocket to mainstream success in 2013, landing at number three in the UK charts and number one in Ireland.
They were also critically acclaimed, having been nominated for the MTV Brand New award and shortlisted for the BBC’s Sound Of 2013.
Their next albums – 2015’s Coming Up For Air and 2018’s Politics Of Living – also reached number one in Ireland, while their fourth, One Day At A Time, landed at number two in 2020.
Career highlights include performing at numerous festivals in Ireland and in the UK, including on Glastonbury’s Other Stage and entertaining huge crowds at Reading and Leeds festivals.
