Actress Eiza González, beloved for her roles in âBaby Driverâ and âFast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw,â has bravely opened up about her health struggles and how she was diagnosed with endometriosis, adenomyosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).Â
Eiza González Shares Her Health Struggles
In an interview with Womenâs Health, published on April 7, González gave insight into her chronic pain and how it had taken decades before she was able to receive answers and an official diagnosis.Â
â[Itâs] the usual story you hear over and over again with women,â she said. âItâs the âOh, this is normal. This is part of your cycle. This is part of your cramps. Oh, this pain is normal, oh, this level of bleeding is normal. Oh, these mood swings are normal. This weight gain is normal.â And itâs just decades of that.â
She continued, âIt just got to this place where eventually your body cracks, and sadly, it was kind of the situation for me. Once I turned 30, I became really consistent. I started doing yearly checkups, like, religiously, with MRIs to keep track of whatâs going on with my body.â
She is 36 now, but her first diagnosis came at 30. It was then that González learned she had severe adenomyosis. After this, she discovered she also had PCOS and endometriosis. Being able to put a name to what she was struggling with is powerful, but for the âAmbulanceâ actress, it also highlighted the problems with womenâs health and how it is approached by medical professionals.Â
âIt made me understand how broken the system is,â she said. âThe gaslighting of years of âYou do have it,â and then âYou donât have it,â from doctors. Just getting a little bit of a light at the end of the tunnel made a difference. Now I can take action and be kinder to my body, where I used to be like, âWhy am I not recovering faster?â Or âWhy am I getting these period pains?ââ
Eiza González Praised for Spreading Awareness
González also learned that when she spoke about her conditions, many people were unfamiliar with them, which she found “mind-boggling.” This is one of the reasons it is so important to speak up, and she is not the first celebrity to do so. There are other stars who have discussed having endometriosis, including âDancing with the Starsâ mirrorball champion Bindi Irwin, model Barbara Palvin, and Tara Lipinski and Emma Roberts.
They have spoken out about their diagnoses in an effort to raise awareness and encourage other women to advocate for themselves and listen to their bodies, despite what medical professionals may be telling them.Â
González shared her joy at being interviewed by Womenâs Health in an Instagram post on April 9. âThank you so much @womenshealthmag for this beautiful conversation and cover. This day was filled with gratitude, laughter and joy,â she wrote. âI grew up admiring the wonderful women who graced this cover with confidence. Sharing their personal journeys bravely hoping that maybe it connect with someone out there. Iâm honored to join the today. I hope that my story connects with someone out there.â
Fans and celebrities praised her in the comment section. âLove your interview! Thank you for using your voice and platform,â a comment reads.
âThis article is touching, honest and vulnerable and in the same sense so empowering. It captures so much of who you are. Truly, so talented and a girls girl through and through. Congrats on all of your continued success,â another comment states.
