Holy moly, can you say âdoppelgängersâ? Megaproducer Ryan Murphy has officially kicked off production in New York and shared the first look at his upcoming FX limited series, “American Love Story.” The series is the next installment in his acclaimed anthology franchise.
âWe started shooting this week in New York City and canât wait until you see the romantic and tragic love story between Americaâs prince, JFK Jr., and fashion icon Carolyn Bessette â out Valentineâs Day week of 2026,â Murphy wrote on Instagram.
He added, âI am thrilled to introduce you to Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn and Paul Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. Over a thousand actors auditioned for each of these roles, and we absolutely found the perfect choices.”
Murphy also released a video showing a camera test with the actors rocking some true 90s fashion. Fans were quick to note how strikingly they resembled their real-life counterparts, especially Kelly as JFK Jr.
One excited viewer tweeted, â@ryanmurphyproductions casually dropped the best entertainment on TV,â while another wrote, âWow!!! Stunning cast! I canât wait to watch it! ðððâ¤ï¸.â
A New Chapter in the ‘American Story’ Legacy
Pidgeon, known for “The Wilds” and Broadwayâs “Stereophonic,” plays Calvin Klein publicist Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Kelly, a theater veteran making his on-screen debut, portrays JFK Jr. The cast also includes Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, Sydney Lemmon as Lauren Bessette, and Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein.
Set against the glare of the 1990s tabloid frenzy, the series chronicles JFK Jr. and Bessetteâs whirlwind romance. They met in 1992, married privately on Cumberland Island in 1996, and tragically died in a 1999 plane crash en route to Bessette’s sister’s wedding in Marthaâs Vineyard.
The FX Story Continues With ‘Love Story’
According to FX, the story explores: âWhat started out as a beautiful union ⦠began to fray under the stress of the relentless microscope and navel gaze of tabloid media ⦠ended with their tragic deaths when his private plane crashed into the ocean on a hazy summer night off the coast of Massachusetts.”
This will be the fourth series in Murphyâs anthology universe, following “American Horror Story,” “American Crime Story,” and “American Sports Story.” His most recent notorious work was when he made headlines with two massive true crime hits, âDahmer â Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Storyâ and âThe Menendez Murders: Erik and Lyle.â
Evan Peters, who frequently works with Murphy, starred as the infamous serial killer and drew both acclaim and controversy for his portrayal and the impact it had on the victimsâ families. The series became one of Netflix’s most-watched series of all time. Following the success of the series, he went on to launch the story of the Menendez brothers, which was the next installment in the âMonsterâ anthology.
Unfortunately, there has been no official premiere date announced as of yet. But, with cameras rolling in New York, fans can expect more teasers and updates before its Valentineâs Day debut. If past performance is any indication, Murphy is already crafting another must-watch hit!
