Games Inbox: Why isn’t there a Skyrim remake?

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Dragonborn
Skyrim isn’t getting any younger (Bethesda)

The Tuesday letters page doesn’t think there’s much chance of the PS5 boycott holding, as one reader wonders how far in advance God Of War’s plot has been planned.

Very special edition
Given all the talk about remakes at the moment, and Bethesda’s less than speedy progress with The Elder Scrolls 6, I have to wonder why there’s never been any remake of Skyrim. There’s been a dozen different remasters and special editions but despite being 15 years old now I’ve never heard anyone talking about remaking it.

If the next game is still two or three years out why didn’t they try and fill the gap with a Skyrim makeover? I’m sure people would’ve been more interested in that than more Starfield DLC. It wouldn’t even have taken time away from Bethesda as they could’ve got someone else to do it, as often seems to happen with remakes.

I feel there’s a lot of this sort of what if sentiment at the moment, where gamers seem to have a better handle on what makes sense, and what would sell, than publishers. So since this is a good idea (in my opinion) I assume it’ll never happen.

Old war
A boycott of PlayStation 5 is exactly the sort of thing that would change Sony’s mind about physical games but, let’s face it, it’s never going to happen. Not only is nobody going to do it but those that pretend to care will suddenly come up with excuses and loopholes for why they don’t have to do it.

The time to do all this was 10 years ago or whenever it was they killed second-hand games. That was when the balance shifted and the publishers won. At the end of the day buying a game online is just much easier than going out to a shop and buying it and then putting the disc in. It’s just too much effort and people aren’t into that.

You can’t shoot a tornado
I was watching Twister, the original not the lacklustre sequel, and I thought tornadoes are a bit like dinosaurs with respect to games. There aren’t enough tornadoes in games, just like there aren’t enough dinosaurs. Tornadoes are another missed open goal in game development. Tornadoes in real life must be amazing to witness from a safe distance but a nightmare at close quarters. In a game tornadoes would provide a great obstacle, and lead to entertaining physics.

Apparently tornadoes featured in Just Cause 4 and I vaguely remember encountering them in SimCity. It would be great if tornadoes featured in GTA 6, but I don’t think they get that kind of weather down in that part of America. Or do they?

GC: At least tornadoes are difficult to portray in a video game, unlike dinosaurs, so there’s some excuse. Nevertheless, there was Tornado Outbreak during the Xbox 360 era, and a tornado is central to the plot of the first Life Is Strange. We’re sure there’s more examples too.

No returns
Well, I’ll be doing the PlayStation 5 blackout. I’ve had enough of Sony flexing its muscles whenever it wants. Back in the day of the PlayStation 3 you could pre-order a PlayStation 3 game without paying till a few days before it came out. As soon as the PlayStation 4 came out you pre-order a game and they want payment straight away and if you cancel your pre-order, rather than them refunding you back to your bank it goes in your wallet, because like most companies they don’t want to give you your money back.

I’ve already decided that as soon as my PS5 Pro goes up in smoke I’m done with gaming. Most of it is down to Sony telling me where I can buy my games and making excuses of having to put up prices on PS Plus. I don’t care what anyone says PS Plus prices didn’t have to go up in price. I don’t care what anyone says it boils down to greed. PlayStation 3 was free online gaming, now its £60+ a year depending how you pay.

Not Far enough
I would’ve guessed that Far Cry 6 was even longer ago than 2021. Seems such a long time since people were talking about that series. I can’t help think that it’s basically run its course and Ubisoft would be better off spending the money on making something new.

I know making a success of new IP is supposed to be difficult but does anyone but Ubisoft think a multiplayer spin-off of Far Cry is going to be a hit? The previous games had co-op anyway, so I don’t think maxing out on that idea is going to make much difference. There’s so little in Far Cry that has to be in it – first person and open world is basically it – you could be a lot more imaginative than that.

I hope Capcom knows what it’s doing with trying to have a new Resident Evil every year. They’re flying high at the moment, but they can easily end up in the weeds if they’re not careful. After Resident Evil 0 and a new Resident Evil 1 the only remakes they’ve got left are 5 and 6, and I really don’t know if they’re worth doing.

Even if they are, after that there’s nothing left and you would’ve thought they’d have to rely on spin-offs instead. I’m confused as to why they say at least one a year and yet no spin-offs, so I can only assume they are counting DLC as a release.

If I were them, I would advise getting creative with spin-offs. Revelations is underrated but I miss the days when you used to get lightgun games and weird portable games and, who knows, maybe they’ll even make a good multiplayer game one day.

Personally, I’d try and expand out with other types of games. Maybe something more detective based, like Return Of The Obra Dinn or something – which already had horror elements anyway. Or a straight point ‘n’ click adventure or visual novel, like Phoenix Wright. Or maybe some kind of strategy or management game.

If they’re going to keep aging the characters up realistically maybe they could make a game where Leon’s given a desk job and he’s ordering people around, a bit like Dispatch. Then at the end he’s called out for one last mission. Call me Capcom, my consultancy fees are very reasonable!

Not done yet
I’m also a little worried that Tomb Raider may have passed its sell by date. Like the other reader, I’ve liked all the things I’ve seen of the new games so far but is it too little too late?

Crystal Dynamics have been making these games for so long and I thought they might be a bit worn out by now and should probably give it to someone else, but it really looks like it could be their best work. Considering the trouble they’ve been through the last few years that’s impressive. I hope they get a chance to shine.

God of planning
With a second new God Of War game now announced, and maybe not going to be out until 2031, I wonder how far exactly this story is planned out. Unless the next one is suddenly going to be the end of the story, which seems unlikely, do they have things sketched out for decades at a time? A decade sounds like a long time but really that’s only time to make two triple-A games, so it’s not much really.

They said they’ve been planning to make the game with Faye for at least a decade, so is there other stuff seeded in there that we’ll only find out about later? I don’t really want to know ahead of time, I’m just curious, because it seems like it’s the only franchise that is planned out at the moment. Don’t tell me that they’ve got a proper plan for Call Of Duty or Assassin’s Creed or whatever, because I won’t believe it.

It’s cool in theory but you’ve got to wonder who is ever going to see it all. Is Cory Barlog going to be working on these into his 70s? When the older games get more than 20 or 30 years old will they have to be remade again and again, to keep them playable for new generations? Like the Resident Evil games.

Not saying they shouldn’t do it but it seems like a lot of work to me. And what happens when the actors are no longer available? Are they going to be recast or will they use AI? Having a franchise last forever must sound good to publishers but it almost seems like more trouble than it’s worth.

Been playing Splatoon Raiders over the weekend and I enjoy. I’m not going to pretend it’s doing anything new but it’s fun. It really does have the best shooter controls in any console shooter, If you ask me.

I see Yoshi-P is talking about remaking Final Fantasy 6 again, as a four or five part series. I’d love that but how long would that take to come out? That could easily be across three different generations, depending on when they start them.
