Hollywood Icon George Clooney is giving his unfiltered take on probably one of the most talked-about questions about his life! Addressing rumors of retiring from acting, Clooney is making it abundantly clear that he isnât thinking about slowing down.
In a new interview with USA Today published December 2, the 64-year-old made it clear that retirement has never been part of his plan. “If you give up working,” Clooney said, “You lose your place in society.”
For him, there will always be roles to play, no matter how old he gets. “There’s going to be parts for ‘Grandpa gums bread,’ and I’ll be the perfect guy for it,â he joked. âThat’s a good thing about the profession that I’ve chosen.”
Clooney Says He Has No Plans to Walk Away From Acting
Clooney, who shares 8-year-old twins Ella and Alexander with Amal Clooney, also credited his father, Nick Clooney, for shaping his outlook on staying creative.
“My dad’s [almost] 92, and he still writes. Itâs important to stay active,” he said.
“I mean, you’re a writer. I can’t imagine you saying, ‘Well, now that I’m 70, maybe I shouldn’t write anymore.’ I do feel like, because it’s creative, you can stay involved and do what you want to do.”

Still, Clooney acknowledged that aging brings big shifts. “When I turned 60, I had a conversation with my wife [Amal]. I said, ‘Look, I can still play basketball with the boys. I play with 25-year-old guys. I can still hang, I’m in shape. But in 25 years, I’m 85 years old,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how many granola bars you eat, that’s a real number.â
Clooney Reflects on Aging and the Reality of Time Passing
Clooney added that as life moves forward, he is more focused on spending real, intentional time with the people he loves, especially Amal and their twins.
“We also have to make sure we are spending time doing things with our family, with the people we love more,” he said.
“Because Amal and I both tend to focus on trying to accomplish things. We’ve gotten much better at spending time with our kids. Listen, nobody gets it right. I don’t get it right. You probably don’t get it right. But we do the best we can.”
For Clooney, the future is not about slowing down. It is about staying creative, staying connected, and staying present on screen and at home.
Clooney Says Aging Has Given Him Perspective, Not Pressure
In an interview with CBS in November, Clooney explained that growing older has changed how he looks at himself, his marriage, and his work.
Before the cameras rolled, Doane asked if he wanted to check his reflection, but Clooney brushed it off, saying he was “too old” to worry about it. At 64, he shared that letting go of vanity has been freeing.
“You’re chasing your tail, man. It’s going to bite you,” Clooney told Doane. “I am who I am. I look like what I look like, and it’ll be all right.”
He added that aging no longer feels like something to resist. “Well, it’s aging or death. These are two options, right? I’m OK with it. You know, I feel more grounded. Certainly, I’m less angry,” he said.
