Gillian Anderson looks so happy demonstrating Lego The X-Files

Scully herself has endorsed a new Lego set based on 90s TV sensation The X-Files, with a fan-inspired designed featuring eight minifigures and a giant UFO.

Lego don’t often talk publicly about what sort of things they’re willing to make sets based on what is out of bounds. Although minifigures have had realistic looking guns for years, Lego always shies away from non-fantasy military vehicles and anything based on adult-themed movies… kind of.

You’re never going to get official sets based on gory horror movies and the like but surprisingly there is one based on Jaws, which is technically only rated 12. That was made as part of the Lego Ideas line, which is based on fan designs, which then get voted on by the Lego community. The most popular ones get turned into real products, where the original designer gets a small cut of the profits.

That is the slightly convoluted route that has led to an official The X-Files Lego set and the end result is pretty magical, with a ton of minifigures and a highly detailed version of Mulder’s office that’s filled with Easter eggs and nods to the beloved TV show.

The set features Mulder’s office and a forest clearing with a hovering UFO, but the whole thing can be taken apart and displayed separately, including the UFO and the forest scene.

Mulder’s office can be partially taken apart, to better see the details, which include the famous I Want to Believe poster, uneaten sunflower seeds (Mulder’s favourite), an X-Files dossier, and pencils stuck to the ceiling from when Mulder gets bored.

On top of that, there are eight minifigures: Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Walter Skinner, Mr X, Alex Krycek, Carl Busch (aka Cigarette Smoking Man), The Flukeman, and a grey alien. That’s a lot of minifigures for a set like this, with some characters you wouldn’t necessarily have thought would get a look in.

To promote the new set, Gillian Anderson, who previously had said she was done with The X-Files, has reprised her role as Dana Scully for a video short showing Scully uncovering the secrets of the new set.

Anderson claims to be a bona fide Lego fan, saying: ‘It has been so much fun revisiting that world all these years later. This set is a wonderful celebration of the X-Files, and the fans who have kept its mystery alive.

‘The level of detail is brilliant – there are so many little nods that fans will absolutely recognise – and as a Lego fan myself, I love that people can now quite literally build their own X-Files moments at home.’

The set (#21369) is made up of 1,478 Lego pieces and measures 23cm wide, 30cm high, and 23cm deep in its default arrangement. It’ll cost £179.99 in the UK.

It will be available from August 4, from retail stores and the Lego website. But if you’re a Lego Insider (which requires only a free sign-up) you can get it from August 1.
