We’ve got great news and slightly worse news for Good Omens’ fans.

The great news is that after what feels like a very long wait, the demon Crowley (David Tennant) and the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) are back for season 3.

The bad news? Well, apparently, fans think the ending is a bit of a disaster. Who could have predicted it?

Well, besides Agnes Nutter.

Anyway, the series dropped on Amazon Prime Video this morning at 8 am (UK time), and fans have already binged the whole 90-minute special.

And sadly, so far, they seem distinctly unimpressed with the series grand finale.

But before we get on to that, a brief warning. We’re going to be discussing spoilers, so if you don’t want to know how the series ends, leave now and come back later.

Still with me? Good, we can begin!

How does Good Omens season 3 end?

Basically, Good Omens season three sees the Archangel Michael use the Book of Life to destroy the universe.

At the end, all that remains is Crowley, Aziraphale and the Whickber Street bookshop.

Oh, and God and Satan are also still knocking about, seemingly content with spending the rest of eternity catching up with each other.

Crowley and Aziraphale, however, are less into this idea and convince God to reboot reality, but this time they want a universe without Heaven and Hell.

God, rather surprisingly, decides to give this a go and uses her infinite power to reboot everything – wiping out Crowley and Aziraphale in the process.

All is not lost, however, as in this new reality, a now-human Anthony Crowley stumbles across the bookshop, staffed by an equally human Asa Fell and they fall in love.

Cute right? Well, according to fans… no.

What do fans think of the Good Omens season 3 ending?

While Good Omens season three has only been out for a few hours, the ending is about as popular as a Satanist in Vatican City.

‘Honestly, the worst ending, which so so soooo many viewers previously acknowledged would have been the worst possible thing to end the show on,’ wrote reindeergames666 on Reddit. ‘I feel so annoyed and sad.’

‘They gave us the ending that was widely considered the worst, laziest, stupidest ending possible,’ agreed Puzzled-Dog-4960.

‘But with a twist! Even the snow globe ending would have been better than this. Unreal how bad it is.’

A lot of people have said this is the worst ending imaginable (Picture: Courtesy of Prime)

‘What was that,? raged ShipNew1880. ‘So Aziraphale and Crowley’s 6000 years don’t amount to anything and they meet as new humans?? But this is worse than them turning into humans; at least they would have had their memories, but they are now new humans with no memories of their shared life.’

The fury wasn’t contained to Reddit either.

‘I’m so damn disappointed with this ending, it’s just like it’s not the show I knew anymore,’ said @999Wrdl. ‘It feels like I ended up watching some other show, but it doesn’t feel like Good Omens.’

@fabledfool added: ‘I think Good Omens is now the title holder for Worst Series Finale of all time.’

‘Good Omens 3 was kind of ass lmao I regret waking up at 3am to watch it,’ claimed @ofrassilon.

Now to be fair to the show, while the bulk of the reaction does seem to be negative it does have its defenders including @aka__allison who said: ‘personally I LOVED the good omens ending.’

@issywilleddie was similarly enthusiastic, claiming: ‘the ending of Good Omens season 3 was actually perfect’.

Still, we found a few defenders… (Picture: Courtesy of Prime)

Critics enjoyed the ending as well (although it only has a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes).

Ed Power from the Daily Telegraph gave it four stars and claimed ‘the finale sticks to what fans loved about the series – in particular, the supernova of luvvydom that is the friendship between its stars, David Tennant and Michael Sheen.’

Dais Johnston at Inverse was also positive writing: ‘It’s the ending that this show, and this fandom, deserves, and even if it’ll go down in history with an asterisk at the end, it still could be one of the better series finales of recent years.’

Sadly, some journos really didn’t like it – including me!

In my two-star review, I said Good Omens 3 was ‘pretty rubbish, despite the ineffable efforts of those involved, and I didn’t have much fun watching it.’

And you know what? I stand by it.

Good Omens 3 is available to watch now on Amazon Prime Video.
