ITV’s new gameshow The Neighbourhood, hosted by Graham Norton, has taken another knock after being pulled from primetime TV.
The new reality series follows real life housholds who move in next to each other and must complete various challenges including hunting garden gnomes and being strapped to the washing line.
Through aliiances, betrayals and good ol’ reality TV twists, one household will win the whopping £250,000 cash prize.
First airing at the end of April, the show kicked off to a rocky start with early reactions dubbing it ‘dreadful’ and full of ‘drivel’. This was matched with poor viewership after around 540,000 people returned to watch, a far cry from the highs ITV would have been hoping for.
By the third episode, it had dwindled to just half-a-million and was perfoming worse than every episode of Celebrity Big Brother which aired at the same time in 2025.
Originally occupying the primetime slot on Thursday and Friday night at 9pm with weekly release – the mood has now shifted. Last week, in an unpredented and unusual move for linear reality TV, ITV uploaded the entire show to ITVX.
Now, it has knocked The Neighbourhood from the top spot at the end of the week. Instead, from tomrrow, it is airing daily at the much later 10:45pm (or 10pm over the weekend) until the show comes to an end.
In its place on Thursday and Friday, ITV has opted to run repeats of Long Lost family and Beat the Chasers, respectively.
An ITV spokesperson said: ‘The full box set of The Neighbourhood is now available to stream on ITVX. Additionally, the show will continue to air in an evening slot on ITV’.
What do media experts think went wrong with The Neighbourhood
‘I’m 37, I remember when you’d hear that X, Y, Z is going to host – like big brother with Davina McCall – like “I’ll give that a go, because I like her”,’ James Buckley-Thorp, reality star on The Inheritance, told Metro in a chat.
He added: ‘It doesn’t seem to be working in the same way. Celebrity-ism has become so wide now, and there are so many different niches, it’s very hard to find that one celebrity that will please the entire family.’
As talent manager of stars like Grace Dent and Ross Kemp and media expert Alex Segel explained: ‘Before social media, there were really only TV stars or film stars. Now there are many more.
‘So everyone has a different version of who they consider famous in their life. Before creators became a thing, and there weren’t other people to watch. You would all have to watch Graham Norton.’
Still, this looks to be a brutal blow for the show whose fate is still to be decided over a second season.
Although fans are not surprised at the development.
‘TV are allowing The Neighbourhood to die a slow death before it’s inevitable cancellation,’ Cameron Attridge wrote on X.
‘After watching two I clocked out,’ Soph shared.
‘ITV spent a lot on making marketing this series. Something has gone terribly wrong here to pull it. There’s such a clamour to make the next Traitors, they can’t come close,’ MatthewPurchase argued.
Others have defended it, however. Rhys wrote: ‘I finished this show the other night and it’s actually a really good show!!’
‘Tough break for ITV as I know they bet the farm on this,’ MrTardis reflected.
The Neighbourhood airs tomorrow at 10:45pm and full series is available to stream on ITVX now.
