GTA 6 won’t run at 60fps even on PS5 Pro say experts despite rumours

Just like with GTA 6’s allegedly downgraded graphics, people are split on whether the game will have an option to run at 60fps or not.

There’s no denying GTA 6 is going to be a massive hit, but you’ll find no shortage of discourse about the game online, most notably concerning its lack of a proper physical version.

The new batch of screenshots shared by Rockstar also has some people thinking the graphics have been downgraded from the trailers while others have argued that they’re too good and not indicative of the game’s actual visuals.

Rockstar hasn’t shared any new in-game footage of GTA 6 either, let alone a demonstration of how it looks when someone’s actually playing it, but Digital Foundry is unconvinced that the game will be able to run at 60 frames per second even on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

GTA 6’s trailers and screenshots have shown off incredibly realistic graphics for the game, with Digital Foundry having praised its use of ray tracing in particular.

As discussed in a recent YouTube video, though, with this high level of graphical fidelity combined with a very large and dense map, it’s expected that GTA 6 will be too demanding and, at best, will offer an option to run at 40fps.

An accompanying write-up on Digital Foundry’s website adds that despite the PlayStation 5 Pro being an upgraded version of the original console, its CPU (central processing unit) isn’t that much of an improvement and thus doesn’t provide a significant boost to performance.

Plus, if the PlayStation 5 Pro were to feature 60fps support, Digital Foundry argues that Sony would have mentioned it in its PlayStation Blog post where it brags about how GTA 6 ‘plays best’ on PlayStation 5.

Said post says nothing about the game’s performance or graphics, focusing on details such as the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and fast loading times.

Rockstar does have a track record with prioritising getting its games running at 30fps at high fidelity, including the initial releases of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

GTA 5 did eventually see a 60fps update when it was ported to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. As for Red Dead Redemption 2, there are persistent rumours of it receiving a next gen upgrade as well that should hopefully boost its performance.

Despite this, there remain rumours that GTA 6 will feature a 60fps mode at launch. One listing from Brazilian retailer Kabum, which is no longer available but was shared to Reddit, stated the game has been optimised for PlayStation 5 Pro and will offer ‘enhanced performance’ and ‘more stable frame rates.’

Digital Foundry has argued that this is just boilerplate text re-used from other listings for games that run on PlayStation 5 Pro and not official information from Rockstar so it shouldn’t be taken at face value.

Another source claiming there’ll be a 60fps mode for GTA 6 is Polish podcast Rock & Borys, which alleges to have heard that Rockstar is aiming to have it ready for launch, but may need to push it back as a post-launch update.

For what it’s worth, Rock & Borys was among the first to claim The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would be receiving new DLC, which was confirmed to be the case earlier this year.
