Gwyneth Paltrow bravely opened up about dealing with anxiety for the first time in her life, as she says it’s likely due to her “hormonal phase of life.”

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Anxiety Battle

The Goop founder, 53, discussed her new mental health battle on Tuesday, November 11, episode of her “The Goop” podcast.

“I have a lot of anxiety for the very first time in my life, which is just a symptom of hormonal changes,” Paltrow said. “I think it’s an estrogen dominance thing. It makes you really anxious.”

The “Shakespeare In Love” actress — who grew up in the public eye as the daughter of famed actress Blythe Danner and film producer Bruce Paltrow — went on to say that part of her anxiety disorder could be attributed to her “public life.”

“So part of it is physiological, part of it is psychological, part of it’s emotional and part of it’s public life,” she explained. “I think whenever we’re at the mercy of people’s opinions and all the energy behind the opinions — I’m very sensitive, as most of us are — so I feel that and it kind of frays my nervous system.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, “experiencing occasional anxiety is a normal part of life. However, people with anxiety disorders frequently have intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations.”

Symptoms often include feeling nervous, a sense of impending danger, increased heart rate, sweating, trouble concentrating, and trouble sleeping, the Mayo Clinic explains.

In addition to anxiety, Paltrow also deals with “a bit of ADD” as well as the feeling of “dread.”

“I can really sort of get pulled in lots of directions,” she explained. “I would love to try to not do that so much and feel more grounded throughout the day.”

While Paltrow revealed she often will “get in bed exhausted and [her] heart will start to race,” she said her sleep “is still pretty okay.”

“Sometimes I wake up first thing in the morning and I’m filled with dread. But it’s never been who I am, so there’s a lot of parts to it, but definitely there’s a big nervous system component.”

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Family Help Calm Her

The “Shallow Hal” star revealed that she has sought the help of two separate therapists as she navigates her mental health, including one who specializes in the nervous system. But her family is also a huge help.

“And then I get a lot of healing from my family, from my kids and my husband,” she said on Tuesday’s podcast. (Paltrow shares daughter Apple and son Moses with ex-husband Chris Martin.)

“If I can be with everyone, especially if all four kids — my stepkids and my kids — and my husband and I, if we’re under one roof, my nervous system calms down,” she added.
