Gwyneth Paltrow is looking back on an early career moment with humor, honesty, and a little hindsight.
The actress revealed that she once declined to film a sex scene with Ethan Hawke while working on the 1998 film âGreat Expectations,â sharing the story during a new video conversation for Vanity Fair.
Why Gwyneth Paltrow Turned Down Sex Scene with Ethan Hawke
Paltrow, 53, and Hawke, 55, reunited nearly three decades after starring opposite one another in the modern adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel.
During the discussion, Hawke recalled a moment that stood out from their time on set â when director Alfonso Cuarón pitched a particularly explicit scene.
âDo you remember Alfonso pitching you the love scene?â Hawke asked.
Paltrow went on to explain the proposed moment involved her character receiving oral sex from Hawkeâs character, as well as the reasoning behind her hesitation. âI was like, âOh, my God, my fatherâs going to have a heart attack,ââ she said.
At the time, Paltrow said her decision was rooted in family considerations and personal comfort. âI was really self-conscious about my dad and grandfather seeing this kind of stuff,â she explained.
Hawke praised how his costar handled the moment, saying she was firm without being difficult.
âYou had an awareness of the way that the business works, and the ways in which those kinds of images could be manipulated and what it meant to your dad,â he told her.

Further in the conversation, the two actors reflected on their long careers and the ideals that shaped them early on.
âWe were two extremely idealistic young people who had a great vision for what we wanted to do and how we wanted to contribute,â Hawke said. âAnd you were never ordinary. Youâve always been you.â
âI think we are fundamentally very much the same people,â Paltrow replied. âI think, you know, we have had these lives that have taken all kinds of twists and turns, but I think weâve both remained true to ourselves and who we are.â
Though the film received mixed reviews at the time of its release, it has since developed a cult following, in part due to the chemistry between its leads and the moody visual storytelling.
Now, decades later, Paltrow and Hawkeâs reflections on that pivotal moment in their careers offer a rare, candid look at the boundaries actors once felt they had to drawâand how those boundaries evolve with time. âI was definitely worried about it,â Paltrow said. âNow, I wouldnât care.â
