Microsoft’s classic for the original Xbox is given the remake treatment in Halo: Campaign Evolved, albeit with some missing features.

The future of Halo is a big question hanging over Xbox, but for now, Microsoft is going back to the beginning with Halo: Campaign Evolved.

The remake, set to launch on July 28 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, gives the 2001 shooter a graphical overhaul in Unreal Engine 5, redesigned missions, updated mechanics, and weapons from later titles – along with three new missions centred around Sergeant Major Avery Johnson.

If you’re looking to pick up the revamped shooter, we’ve gathered all the best pre-order deals, along with how to get early access, below.

On PlayStation 5, Halo: Campaign Evolved is cheapest at Very, with a price of £39.99, with free delivery if you choose the click and collect option. This is £10 off the usual retail price but, for some reason, the same deal doesn’t apply to the Xbox Series X version.

On Xbox Series X/S, your best bet is Currys, which is selling Halo: Campaign Evolved for £40.49 if you take advantage of the 10% off pre-order discount.

Is there any early access?

The premium edition of Halo: Campaign Evolved, which is only available digitally and costs £69.99, comes with up to five days early access. This means you’ll be able to play the game from Thursday, July 23.

There are other extras too in the premium edition, namely an Alpha Halo Armory Pack (containing five Master Chief skins and six weapon skins), a digital artbook, and an Halo: Hungry Buzzards digital short story.

Will it be a hit without competitive multiplayer? (Microsoft)

Does Halo: Campaign Evolved have multiplayer?

Halo: Campaign Evolved comes with two player split-screen co-op on consoles, or up to four player online co-op with crossplay and cross-progression support.

However, as confirmed by developer Halo Studios, the game does not feature any competitive multiplayer modes. The original Halo on Xbox featured competitive multiplayer via split-screen and via LAN (local area network), but online multiplayer was only supported on the PC version.

A remaster, titled Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, added online multiplayer support across all versions in 2011. However, as outlined in an Xbox Wire blog post, the team wanted to focus primarily on the campaign for Halo: Campaign Evolved in order to reset the franchise.

Speaking about the title, executive producer Damon Conn said: ‘We wanted to start where it all began, with the original campaign that defined Halo. Starting here means people that have never played the game before will be able to understand the story from the very beginning, and that can help us chart a course forward with new Halo stories.

‘Focusing on the campaign experience means we can concentrate fully on really capturing the atmosphere, tone – the emotional impact of what made the first campaign so special and iconic.’

A Q&A on the PlayStation Store listing similarly confirms that it will only only offer a co-op multiplayer experience tied to the campaign.

Do we know anything about the next Halo game?

Microsoft hasn’t officially announced anything about the next Halo game, but we know one is in development. Back in 2024, Halo Studios confirmed it was working on multiple Halo titles in Unreal Engine 5, with one of them being Halo: Campaign Evolved.

As such, it’s very likely one of the others is the successor to Halo Infinite. However, following the recent Xbox layoffs, it’s unclear when it will actually be released.
