Harrison Ford Reflects on First Emmy Nomination at 83: ‘It’s Fascinating To Be Alive’

At 83, Harrison Ford continues to defy expectations, earning his first-ever Emmy nomination for his role as Dr. Paul Rhoades in Apple TV+’s “Shrinking.” Yes, despite a career spanning over six decades and iconic roles in “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones,” this show marked a significant milestone in his well-stocked journey, and for a good reason. (At 83!!!)

While speaking with Fox News Digital, Ford shared his thoughts on the nomination. “It’s nice, I appreciate the attention,” he stated. “I appreciate… the proposition. It’s gratifying, but my real pleasure is in the work.” His words humbly underscore a sentiment that has guided his career, which has clearly involved a deep passion for the craft rather than the accolades.

The Craft Over the Curtain Call

Created by Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein, the comedy-drama centers on Jimmy Laird. Portrayed by the “How I Met Your Mother” star, Laird is a grieving therapist who decides to break all the rules. This by telling his patients exactly what he thinks rather than what he should say as a professional. It’s chaos, healing, and hilarity all in one, which makes the show the success it is today. Mostly because it blends sharp humor with heartfelt moments. All while exploring grief, human connection, and the sometimes messy business of being brutally honest.

But it’s Ford’s portrayal of Dr. Rhoades, a senior therapist who is coming to terms with his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, that has garnered critical acclaim. So much so that co-stars, such as Segel, have praised his performance, describing the iconic actor as “a master class.”

The show has truly made a name for itself, with Season one earning Emmy nominations for Segel and Jessica Williams. Ford himself received recognition from the Critics’ Choice Awards and the TCA Awards. Season two, which premiered in October 2024, was celebrated as one of the year’s top ten TV programs by the American Film Institute. Which, yes, was celebrated with the renewal of season three.

Despite the recognition for this acting, Ford remains grounded when it comes to his work. He emphasizes that the true joy lies in the unpredictability of the work. “What’s going to happen, who’s going to do what—it’s fascinating to be alive, and the stuff we do is so demanding, you’re really scared not to do anything.”

Harrison Ford: A Legacy Built on Passion

Despite his Emmy nomination coming late in his career, it hasn’t discouraged the actor from continuing his work. It’s safe to say that since the start, he’s become one of the most recognized actors in cinematic history. His journey serves as a testament to resilience and dedication to the craft. He even told Variety that he has no intentions of retiring anytime soon. “No. That’s one of the things I thought was attractive about the job of an actor,” he said. “That they need old people, too, to play old people’s parts.”

As Ford continues to take on roles that challenge him, including his recent work in “Captain America: Brave New World,” it’s clear that his passion for storytelling remains unwavering. His first Emmy nomination is not just a career milestone but a reflection of a lifelong commitment to the art of acting.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score hovering around 97% for season two and continued acclaim for its writing and performances, we can’t wait to see what “Shrinking” and Ford bring to us next.
