Helena Bonham Carter makes sudden exit from The White Lotus season 4 cast during filming

Helena Bonham Carter has abruptly departed The White Lotus, it has been reported.

It was recently announced that the actress, 59, would be joining the Mike White-created show for its fourth series.

The former Bellatrix Lestrange actress would have joined a cast which includes Steve Coogan, Chris Messina, Marissa Long and AJ Michalka.

Although specific character details have been kept under wraps, it is known that the fourth series will take place in France, where filming is currently underway.

However, it has now been revealed that Carter has exited the project with a spokesperson claiming a ‘misalignment’ between the actress and the character she was set to portray.

A spokesperson for HBO has confirmed that the character will be recast, and the role rewritten in Carter’s absence.

In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson said: ‘With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.’

They continued: ‘The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks.

‘HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.’

Carter would have joined the likes of Jennifer Coolidge, Walton Goggins, Theo James and Jason Isaacs as one of the fictional hotel chain’s most recognisable faces.

With previous seasons being set in Hawaii, Sicily and Thailand, its French setting is expected to be in the French Riviera, against the backdrop of Cannes Film Festival.

Fans of the show have reacted to Carter’s departure with dismay, with X user Luke_Crute describing it as ‘devastating news.’

Bemoaning the show’s loss, buteraiijk wondered ‘how exactly did mike white mess up such amazing casting?’

As sleighhhter shared that it would need ‘a big or exciting name’ to replace Carter’s, others shared their nominations as to who could replace the star.

Names being bandied about included former Friends star Lisa Kudrow, who ‘would be perfect for the show,’ according to filhodolixo.

‘Bring Lena Headey please,’ said got_bh, nominating Game of Thrones’ Cersei Lannistar star.

Said itschrysjuhurdd: ‘JENNIFER TILLY.’

Carter’s abrupt check-out from the HBO drama isn’t the first ‘misalignment’ the show has had with its talent.

Series three in particular, was beset by rumours of a feud between members of the cast, with star Jason Isaacs likening the experience to Lord of the Flies.

‘It was like a cross between summer camp and Lord of the Flies but in a gilded cage,’ he said.

‘It wasn’t a holiday. Some people got very close, there were friendships that were made and friendships that were lost,’ he told Vulture.

Last year, it was also revealed that composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer had quit the show due to creative differences.

Describing conversations with producers as ‘hysterical’, he said that he was prompted to leave the show after a disagreement with White over the iconic White Lotus theme.

He told The New York Times: ‘People are furious about the change of the theme, and I thought that was interesting.

‘I texted the producer and I told him that it would be great to, at some point, give them the longer version with the ooh-loo-loo-loos, because people will explode if they realize that it was going there anyway. He thought it was a good idea. But then Mike cut that — he wasn’t happy about that.’

Uploading his version of the theme to YouTube, de Veer then quit the show, saying that he and White had ‘already had our last fight forever’ by that point.

He added: ‘Maybe I was being unprofessional, and for sure Mike feels that I was always unprofessional to him because I didn’t give him what he wanted. But what I gave him did this, you know — did those Emmys, people going crazy.’
