Here’s the Other Honor Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Could End up Losing Amid Epstein Fallout

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s long association and friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein cost him his reputation, his regal titles, and the large estate in Windsor where he resided for more than two decades.

The disgraced royal was shipped off to a property in Sandringham after King Charles <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/king-charles-just-put-his-foot-down-as-andrew-can-no-longer-use-prince-title-and-must-leave-royal-lodge-home.html/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>stripped his brother of his titles and evicted him from Royal Lodge. It was thought that with Andrew basically <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/royal-exile-king-charles-refused-see-brother-andrew-despite-staying-just-five-minutes-away.html/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>living in exile and out of sight, that he would be out of mind. But Andrew caused another headache for his family on Feb. 19 when news broke that <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/not-so-royal-andrew-mountbatten-windsor-treated-11-hours-under-arrest.html/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>he was arrested for suspicion of misconduct in public office, also related to Epstein.

Following his arrest, the king released a statement that read, “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair, and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.

“In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”

Now, it’s being reported that the ex-prince could be stripped of one of his last remaining honors.

According to <a href=”https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/royals/andrew-mountbatten-windsor-could-lose-37028972″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Mirror, a formal letter has been sent to Andrew from a corporation urging him to give up an honor he received not on his own merits but because of his father, Prince Philip.

Elected members of the City of London Corporation have written to the ex-duke and asked him to give up the freedom of the city honour, which he received in 2012. The group added that Andrew inherited the honour ‘by virtue of patrimony’ because his dad, the late Prince Philip, was formerly a freeman.

In a statement released on April 16, a spokesperson said: “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received the freedom of the City of London in 2012 by virtue of patrimony, which is inherited as the child of a freeman and constitutes a legal right. Applications via patrimony are not considered or endorsed by our elected members, and there is no effective legal mechanism to remove this type of freedom.

“Elected members have today agreed to write to Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor, inviting him to formally relinquish the freedom. They will consider the response received, if any, at a future meeting and determine what action may be taken.”

Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, who held the “Freedom of the City of York honour,” was stripped of that following a unanimous vote in March.

Andrew has kept a low profile since his arrest as he’s only been spotted a few times on his new property walking his dogs. He has denied any wrongdoing regarding his relationship with Epstein, but hasn’t made any public comments since his arrest on Feb. 19 for suspicion of misconduct in public office.
