Christina Haack has said that after three failed marriages, she’s not looking to tie the knot again anytime soon. But if the HGTV star does decide to say “I do” for a fourth time – perhaps to her new boyfriend, businessman Christopher Larocca – she would be smart to take steps to protect herself financially, an expert says.

Christina Haack Forced to Slash Spending to Pay for Her Divorce: ‘This Dress Was $65’

Christina recently settled her divorce from her third husband, Josh Hall. While the exact terms of the settlement haven’t been made public, we do know it was a contentious split. The Flip or Flop personality said that at one point, her ex had demanded $65,000 per month in spousal support (via <a href=”https://people.com/christina-hall-haack-husband-josh-denies-asking-for-65000-per-month-in-spousal-support-8729710″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>People). She also claimed he was frittering away money she gave him on expensive cars and other luxuries. More recently, she said that disentangling herself from her ill-advised union was expensive, and that’s she’s had to put herself on a budget in order to manage her expenses.

The Christina on the Coast star would likely have been more protected financially if she’d signed a prenup. If she decides to marry again, that should be a top item on her to-do list, Lisa Robinson, a divorce attorney with Rosen Law Firm, told Showbiz Cheat Sheet.

“I would also encourage a pre-nup and keeping assets as separate as possible the next time around,” she said.

Christina has admitted that failing to sign a prenuptial agreement before marrying Josh was a major misstep.

“It’s crazy. He wants to retire off me,” she told her friend Cassie Schienle during an episode of her recent show, The Flip Off. “Honestly, if I would’ve really understood the repercussions of all of this, I would’ve gotten a prenup or I would’ve never married him.”

Why the ‘Christina on the Coast’ star chose mediation to settle her divorce

Like many people, Christina and Josh settled their divorce through mediation rather than a trial. Such an approach has many advantages, especially for people in the public eye, Robinson said.

“Mediation allows parties privacy in their personal matters, and the process allows both parties some input in the decision-making process,” she explained, adding that a majority of clients she works with resolve their splits in mediation.

“It is voluntary, causal, and affords both parties the opportunity to share their side of the story,’ she added. “If a domestic matter is handled by a judge, the judge (an outsider) makes decisions based on the limited information that appears in the court file and from testimony.”

In her divorce, Christina had a powerful force on her side. She hired Laura Wasser – aka the “Disso Queen” – a high-profile Los Angeles lawyer known for handling divorces for many celebrities, including Britney Spears, Johnny Depp, and Angelina Jolie. In a May 1 post on her Instagram Story, Christina thanked Wasser and said she was looking forward to moving on now that her split was final. Robinson said Christina had the right outlook.

“Christina has made several comments about moving on and entering the next chapter of her life,” she said. “There is life post-divorce. It is so rewarding when the process is over.’

“She deserves praise for moving on,” Robinson added, as well as for embracing mediation. “Again, using mediation is typically less toxic than litigation; mediation is also going to be less expensive in terms of money and emotional turmoil.”
