Hilary Swank has always been honest about what matters most to her. These days, that answer is simple. It is two little ones, a garage full of homemade equipment, and a life she says she would not trade for anything.
The two-time Academy Award winner is giving fans a rare and heartwarming glimpse into her world as a mother of twins, and the picture she is painting is as real and joyful as it gets.
The timing of Swank’s sweet Instagram post feels just right. With Mother’s Day around the corner, it is a wholesome reminder that mamas everywhere are out here doing it all and doing it beautifully.
Hilary Swank’s Husband Built the Family’s Dream Garage Gym â and the Story Behind It Is Priceless
Swank, 50, recently returned to social media with a post that felt less like a fitness update and more like a love letter to her family.
“My workout routine is a little different these days,” she wrote. “It mostly happens in the garage.”
With 3-year-old twins filling every corner of her days, the traditional gym routine was never going to cut it. So Swank and her husband, Philip Schneider, put their heads together and built something better. Something the whole family could share.
Schneider designed and constructed most of it himself, pulling in a couple of friends and using as much recycled material as possible.
The star attraction was a tube slide he spotted on the side of the freeway and could not resist bringing home.
“I’m just grateful he didn’t burn down the garage in the process,” Swank wrote warmly. “I usually hide power tools from him.”
The result is the kind of space every family dreams about.
Part gym, part playground, part sanctuary. On any given day, it transforms into a tap dancing studio, a rock-climbing wall, a fireman’s pole adventure, a tumbling zone, and a cozy reading nook the family has lovingly named the “spider web.”
“Some days it’s a quick power-lift during nap time,” she wrote.
“Other days it’s tap dancing, swinging around like monkeys, rock-climbing ‘Everest’ to find the whale, pretending we’re firemen going up and down the fire-pole, or just lying in the ‘spider web’ reading books on a rainy afternoon.”
It is the kind of family life that does not need a filter.
Hilary Swank on Balancing ‘Yellowjackets’ and Toddler Life â and Why She Would Not Change a Thing
Back on set for the hit Showtime series “Yellowjackets,” Swank acknowledged that the long filming days make balance a real challenge. But the moment she walks through her front door, her priorities are crystal clear.
“I’m back on set for ‘Yellowjackets,’ so grateful, but the hours are long,” she wrote. “And when I’m home, I just want to be with the kids.”
That pull toward her family is something she has spoken about openly and warmly.
In October 2024, she spoke to People and said, “I knew I wanted to be an actor since I was 8 years old, and I have loved my career,” she said.
“So I was really career-focused and I wasn’t ready to have children in my 20s, or really even in my 30s, and then I hit my 40s and I didn’t have a partner.”
The “P.S I Love You” Star added, “A lot of people get donors, and that’s a wonderful option, a lot of people adopt, there’s a lot of different ways, and so I was open to anything,” she said.
She made clear that becoming a mother was always something she wanted, no matter the path.
In a December 2024 appearance on “TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle”, Swank reflected on the road that led her to this moment. “Everything is new again,” she said. “You hear that, but until you experience it, you’re like ‘What does that even mean?’ But now I know.”
Hilary Swank Says Motherhood Has Made Her a More Patient and Present Person
Swank froze her eggs at 37, a decision she described not as a guarantee but as something that gave her breathing room.
A decade later, she used those eggs to conceive, becoming pregnant at 47 and welcoming twins, Aya and Ohm, with Schneider in April 2023.
“I would have had kids earlier,” she told Women’s Health in April 2025. “I’m not saying I actively waited until 47. But that was a magical time in my life, when it all culminated. It was the right time for myriad reasons.”
For Swank, the garage may be where the workouts happen, but it is clear that the real magic is happening all around her.
