Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson Reveal What They Learned from Each Other Filming ‘Song Sung Blue’

Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson have revealed what they learned about each other while filming their new biographical musical drama movie “Song Sung Blue.”

The Australian actor, 57, and his co-star, 46, are playing married couple Mike “Lightning” Sardinia and Claire “Thunder” Sardinia — real-life entertainers who performed as the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder — in the film, which is helmed by “Dolemite Is My Name” director Craig Brewer. Per IMDb, its brilliant cast also includes Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, Mustafa Shakir, Fisher Stevens, Beth Malone, King Princess, and Jim Belushi.

Looking at Jackman and Hudson’s social media accounts, you can see from their time together on the press tour for “Song Sung Blue” that they get along great, which always bodes well for on-screen chemistry.

In New York City on Monday, December 1, at the 35th annual Gotham Film Awards, the duo received the inaugural Gotham Musical Tribute for their performances in the new flick. The Gotham Film & Media Institute published a press release on November 4, with the organization’s Executive Director, Jeffrey Sharp, saying, “Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman deliver performances in Song Sung Blue that are at once powerful, intimate, and deeply human.”

It was at the ceremony that they spoke to People on the red carpet about the one thing they learned from one another during production.

Hugh Jackman spoke extremely highly of working with Kate Hudson on “Song Sung Blue” — to the extent that the experienced A-list actor said that she taught him about acting.

Jackman said, “I learned a lot from Kate. I learned about acting on film, actually. I’ve done almost 50 films, but, somehow, working with Kate — it’s a very difficult thing to describe — but the mixture of being prepared and just being instinctive is a really fine line and no one does it better than Kate Hudson.”

He added, “Being with her, I learned and I think I became a better actor. Also, there were two key moments where she stuck up for the film, which was inconvenient for timing and everyone, but both of the moments are key moments in the movie now. So, it’s sort of that idea of picking your battles, knowing when you need to just really say, ‘No I disagree.’ And I learned that from Kate, because she’s the sweetest, nicest, kindest, always great. So when Kate Hudson says, ‘I think this is a mistake, I think we should go left and not right,’ everyone stops and listens.”

Given that Jackman is the more experienced musical actor, having played key roles in the likes of 2012’s “Les Misérables” and 2017’s “The Greatest Showman,” those words are hugely complimentary of Hudson. However, considering that there’s already Academy Award buzz around the performance given by Goldie Hawn’s daughter in the new movie, they should come as no surprise.

Kate Hudson was equally complimentary of Hugh Jackman, but her compliments were more about the Wolverine actor’s personality.

Hudson said, “Hugh, his superpower is to connect. Whether it’s on stage, whether it’s on set, whether it’s with anyone and everyone — he just wants to connect and he wants to make sure that everyone’s happy. I learned that one of the great gifts you can give people is that you actually have a desire to connect to them.”

She then turned to Jackman and told him directly, “I think you give that to everybody — even though I’m sure it takes a lot from you. You’re like a masseuse who’s constantly giving energy to other people, and needs energy for you.”

Both Jackman and Hudson took their co-stars’ praise with the humility you’d expect of two of Hollywood’s nicest individuals — and Hudson was equally humble when it came to the topic of the aforementioned Oscar talk.

The star said, “You never know with these things. I’ve been around now long enough to know just to enjoy that people are really loving the movie. And just, you know, show up to where they tell me to go.”

Hudson is no stranger to musical movies herself, having played a supporting role in 2009’s musical drama “Nine.” However, given Jackman’s significant experience playing starring roles in such productions, his words about her performance in “Song Sung Blue” are high praise indeed.

“Song Sung Blue” will be released theatrically in the United States on Christmas Day — and you should definitely check it out.
