Hulu is one of the most popular streaming platforms, and it’s home to several original series. One of them is “Mid-Century Modern,” which premiered in March 2025. Despite high reviews from critics, the word is that Hulu has given it the axe. “Mid-Century Modern” starred Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, and Nathan Lee Graham.
Max Mutchnick, one of the show’s creators, shared the news on Instagram on September 29. He wrote, “Ten great episodes… Not enough. But we loved making every single one of them. Weâre gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”
Muchnick created “the series “Mid-Century Modern” alongside David Kohan. Notably, they are also the creative team behind “Will & Grace.” Both Lane and Bomer were executive producers on the series, as was Ryan Murphy. James Burrows, who also worked on “Will & Grace,” directed all 10 episodes of the show.
‘Mid-Century Modern’ Has Strong Reviews from Critics
Many streaming shows come and go, but few receive the same critical acclaim as “Mid-Century Modern.” Currently, the show has a healthy 88 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This score earns it a “certified fresh” rating on the platform.
It also has high reviews from audiences. On average, it has an 80 percent rating from viewers. Of course, Rotten Tomatoes isn’t the only platform where the series fared well. It has a 67 percent rating from critics, which is considered “generally favorable.” However, audiences gave the series a 5.8 out of 10, rating it as “mixed or average.”
It’s unclear why Hulu has canceled the fan-favorite series. However, it’s important to note that the show never made it onto the Neilson top 10 for streaming shows. This means that low viewership was likely the reason the streaming platform discontinued the show.
The Cast Has Other Projects in the Works
Having a show canceled after a single season is bad news for any actor, even if they are as established as Lane and Bomer. However, all three lead actors have other projects on the horizon. Regarding Lane, Broadway World reported in June 2025 that he would be returning to the stage. However, details of the production are unknown except that he’ll be working with director Joe Mantello.
Bomer is also busy as he will star in the upcoming “Outcome” film. It was shot in 2023, and Apple Studios acquired the rights to it. Additionally, a movie version of the “White Collar” series, in which he starred for six seasons, is in development.
As for Graham, Variety reported in July that he’d been cast in an upcoming supernatural thriller, “Destiny Jackson.” He will play a detective in the film.
He said of the role, “I have always wanted to play a detective with their many layers of emotions. Just think of Sam Spade, Sherlock Holmes, Jessica Fletcher, Columbo, and Shaft. Not to mention my love for all things Agatha Christie. Can you sense my excitement?”
