Once upon a time, Zac Efron couldn’t buy a coffee without causing a major public disturbance.
The High School Musical star spent much of the 2000s and 2010s as one of Hollywood’s most recognisable faces, navigating blockbuster movies, screaming fans, and relentless tabloid scrutiny.
These days, however, his life looks very different.
Instead of red carpets and paparazzi hotspots, Efron has spent recent years quietly building a life on the other side of the world, retreating to the lush countryside of northern New South Wales and embracing a far slower pace of living.
Now, fresh updates suggest the actor’s Australian future is becoming increasingly permanent, according to The Daily Mail.
Efron has reportedly been secretly living near Byron Bay while overseeing construction of his sustainable dream home, dubbed the ‘Futurecave’.
Efron had a difficult time in Hollywood after first skyrocketing to fame, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2014 about his struggles with drugs and alcohol.
‘It’s a never-ending struggle,’ the actor said. ‘I was drinking a lot, way too much.’
Things began to get difficult for Efron as he tried to work his way from being the teen star of High School Musical and Hairspray to more adult roles with movies like The Lucky One and The Paperboy.
‘I had done films back-to-back-to-back. I was burnt out,’ he said. ‘There was something lacking, some sort of hole that I couldn’t really fill up. I was just so deep into my work, it was really the only thing I had.’
After getting sober, Efron suffered a serious fall in his LA home, later explaining in a 2022 Men’s Health interview that he broke his jaw so severely ‘his chin was hanging off his face.’
As a result of reconstructive surgery, and eventual physical therapy, Efron’s appearance changed enough to spark rampant rumours that he’d undergone major plastic surgery.
After all that, it makes sense why he chose to get away from it all in the land down under.
Efron’s affection for Australia first became obvious during the Covid pandemic.
While much of Hollywood remained centered around Los Angeles, the actor spent extended periods Down Under, filming projects, surfing, and largely avoiding the spotlight.
Over the years, he has spoken candidly about some of the pressures that came with fame, particularly after becoming a global sensation at a young age.
The actor has previously described periods of intense anxiety, burnout, and struggles with substance abuse during the height of his Hollywood career.
In interviews, he has said he feels happiest when disconnected from the constant noise of celebrity culture. Australia appeared to offer exactly that.
The relaxed lifestyle, outdoor culture, and relative anonymity proved a stark contrast to life in Los Angeles.
Friends have repeatedly described him as happiest when surfing, hiking or spending time in nature rather than attending industry events.
The actor purchased a sprawling 128-hectare property near Tomewin, close to Byron Bay, back in 2020.
The rainforest estate boasts creeks, waterfalls, and sweeping views across the countryside.
Rather than constructing a traditional luxury mansion, Efron enlisted renowned environmental designer Joost Bakker to create something radically different.
The result is the Futurecave — a six-bedroom, two-storey off-grid residence designed around sustainability and environmental restoration.
Recently shared images reveal hemp-based construction materials, recycled oyster shells, agricultural waste products and experimental low-carbon building techniques being developed specifically for the project.
Just last month, Bakker confirmed construction was finally ready to begin.
‘Excited to get started on Zac’s house!’ he wrote on Instagram.
‘Especially want to thank these two legends @main__frank for working so hard to get this project designed and approved.’
The home is expected to cost approximately AU$5.5million (£2.65m) and cover around 830 square metres.
Plans include interconnected living pods, green roofs covered in vegetation, a gym and innovative materials designed to naturally regulate temperature and air quality.
According to Bakker, Efron actively encouraged him to push sustainable architecture as far as possible.
‘It’s not every day of the week that @zacefron asks you to design his home,’ he previously wrote.
‘Especially as it will be the first home he has ever owned!’
The environmental designer revealed the pair spent years experimenting with alternatives to traditional concrete.
‘We’re experimenting with making hemp blocks, replacing concrete with two materials that restore the environment — hemp, possibly the best plant on earth at repairing and restoring soil health, and of course oysters, nature’s ultimate ocean restorer,’ he explained.
The project’s sustainability goals extend beyond the structure itself.
Kitchen and bathroom fittings will reportedly be built using plant-based boards made from agricultural crop waste as part of Bakker’s Plantbord initiative.
While Efron has never formally confirmed plans to relocate permanently, speculation has persisted for years.
The rumours intensified after he listed his Los Angeles home for sale and continued spending significant stretches of time in Australia.
The actor has repeatedly returned to the country for work, filming Netflix series Down to Earth with Zac Efron and Australian thriller Gold.
He has also been spotted attending events including the Australian Formula One Grand Prix and has built close friendships within the Byron Bay community.
