Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson were co-stars in the 2003 romantic comedy, âSomething’s Gotta Give.â The pair delivered incredible performances, and the film was a hit, even earning Keaton an Academy Award nomination. However, there was one thing that the actress failed to do when signing onto the film: she did not negotiate a back end to her contract.
Keaton revealed this information in her memoir âThen Again,â which was published in 2011.Â
How Jack Nicholson Showed His Appreciation for Diane Keaton
In Keatonâs memoir, she revealed how she earned significantly less than her co-star. But Nicholson would do something that left Keaton pleasantly surprised. In her memoir, she wrote about her shock âwhen a check with a lot of zeros arrived in the mail for my back-end percentage,â Daily Mail reports.Â
The money had come from Nicholson’s âhefty percentage of the film’s gross earnings,â Daily Mail reports. In Keatonâs memoir, she also revealed that she had initially thought the film would not do well at the box office but called it her âfavorite film,â The Guardian reports.Â
Keatonâs acting was so convincing that Nicholson even believed she was in love with him. âWeâre rehearsing that scene in the street, where heâs running after her, and he calls me over after one rehearsal. Heâs all rattled,â director Nancy Meyers said at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018, Vulture reports.Â
âI said, âWhatâs up?â And he goes, âDiane just told me she loves me.â I couldnât tell if he was horrified or thrilled. So I was like, âYes, I know, I wrote that line. Itâs in the script, Jack.â And he said, âOh, okay.â He thought she meant it. Itâs really funny. Thatâs her.â
