Losing a close friend is a pain that never fades, and Jane Fonda is feeling that loss deeply. Fonda is now honoring her dear friend and âBook Clubâ co-star Diane Keaton. The Oscar winner shared an emotional tribute on Instagram after news broke that Keaton died on October 11 at age 79, as reported by People.
âItâs hard to believe or accept that Diane has passed,â Fonda wrote. âShe was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her worldview. Unique is what she was. And, though she didnât know it or wouldnât admit it, man, she was a fine actress!â
Fondaâs moving tribute beautifully captured Keatonâs humor, originality, and boundless creativity, which made her unforgettable both on and off screen.
‘Book Club’ Castmates Share Heartfelt Memories
Keatonâs âBook Clubâ co-stars, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, also expressed their grief and love.
âThis is a huge loss, both personally and for all of us,â Bergen said in a statement, as published by People. âDiane was a true artist, tremendously gifted and uniquely talented in so many disciplines, yet also modest and wonderfully eccentric. I will miss her terribly.â
Steenburgen shared, âDiane was magic. There was no one, nor will there ever be, anyone like her. I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. My love to her family. What a wonder she was!!!â
The four actresses formed a genuine bond while filming âBook Clubâ and its 2023 sequel âBook Club: The Next Chapter,â alongside Andy Garcia, Don Johnson, Richard Dreyfuss, and Craig T. Nelson.
A Friendship That Transcended the Screen
Fonda previously opened up about her friendship with Keaton, Bergen, and Steenburgen in her 2023 People cover story.
âItâs everything I imagined womenâs friendships can be,â Fonda said. âWhen I was younger, there was this assumption that women were kind of catty and four stars working together wouldnât work because theyâd be competing, and itâs just not true. Weâre friends, we love working together, and we help each other when we need to.â
Steenburgen once described their connection as âkind of obsessed with each other.â Speaking to Andy Cohen in 2019, she said, âNone of us had ever worked together, and there had been these little meetings over the years, but the stories are so incredible.â
Keatonâs laughter, creativity, and warmth left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her, both on screen and in real life. Keaton passed away in California on October 11, a family spokesperson confirmed to People.
