Japanese embassy needs to calm down as it sends bizarre letter to Taylor Swift

In a totally normal turn of events, the Japanese embassy has now issued a statement on Taylor Swift to her beloved yet angsty fans.

No, we’re not joking – an actual official organisation has waded in to soothe fears over a possible clash in commitments.

Feverish discussion followed after her NFL player boyfriend Travis Kelce’s team the Kansas Chiefs qualified for the Super Bowl on February 11.

Taylor, 34, has been a vocal (and visible) fan of her tight end partner, also 34, at his games in recent months, so many would expect her to be in the crowd as he seeks a third NFL championship.

However, the Cruel Summer chart-topper has a prior date in her diary as she’s set to play a sold-out show as part of her Eras Tour in Tokyo, the night before.

Cue a lot of frantic maths as fans tried to work out if it was physically possible for the singer and Time magazine’s Person of the Year to make it back from Japan to Las Vegas, the city hosting the tournament, in time.

There is a 17-hour time difference and an approximate 12-hour flight, leaving many people concerned that she wouldn’t be able to make it (if she so chooses to try).

However, the Embassy of Japan in Washington D.C. was all over this problem, sharing an explanatory letter on X.

‘The embassy of Japan in the United States is aware of recent media reports concerning the steps Taylor Swift will need to take to travel from Tokyo after her concert on 10 February to Las Vegas in time to watch the Kansas City Chiefs play in Super Bowl LVIII,’ it began its statement.

Leaning in to those hard-to-resist puns with album titles, the embassy continued: ‘Despite the 12-hour flight and 17-hour time difference, the embassy can confidently Speak Now to say that if she departs Tokyo in the evening after her concert, she should comfortably arrive in Las Vegas before the Super Bowl begins.’

Continuing what it had started, the embassy added: ‘We know that many people in Japan are excited to experience Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, so we wanted to confirm that anyone concerned can be Fearless in knowing that this talented performer can wow Japanese audiences and still make it to Las Vegas to support the Chiefs when they take the field for the Super Bowl wearing Red.’

However, that calculation doesn’t necessarily take into consideration the busy air traffic expected around Vegas at that time, as well as reports that most spots for private aircraft have already been booked.

Taylor’s frequent appearances at football games has led to inflated viewing numbers for the NFL, and brought in a new female audience thanks to the so-called ‘Taylor Swift effect’.

It was even parodied on sketch show Saturday Night Live in October, in which Travis made a cameo, encouraging commentators to focus on the football rather than Taylor’s reactions in the box.
