Actor Jason Biggs recently revealed deeply personal details about his addiction struggles during an appearance on Arielle Lorre’s “Well” podcast, sharing how his lowest point involved repeatedly retrieving cocaine from trash cans during a single night. The “American Pie” star, now over seven years sober, used his experience to illustrate how addiction can drive someone to unimaginable behavior.
The 47-year-old actor described a particularly harrowing evening when his wife Jenny Mullen was asleep upstairs, unaware of his drug use. After telling himself he was taking his “last line” of cocaine, Biggs threw the remaining drugs into their household trash can, only to retrieve them within 15 minutes when the effects wore off.
“Within 15 minutes, as soon as my last bump is wearing off, what am I doing?” Biggs recalled on the podcast. “I go into my trash, and I take it out and I do a line.”
The cycle continued as Biggs moved the drugs to an outdoor trash bin, then drove to dispose of them on Sunset Boulevard, even placing the bag inside a coffee cup with remaining coffee. Each time, he found himself returning to retrieve the substances when their effects diminished.
The Mental Exhaustion of Addiction
Biggs discussed how addiction consumed his daily thinking and planning, describing the mental toll of organizing his entire life around drug use. His schedule became dictated by when and where he could access substances, creating an exhausting cycle of obsessive thoughts.
“For me, it was the obsession over it,” he explained. “It was wake up and immediately think, ‘How am I going to get my first line?’ to ‘When is this going to happen? What do I have today?’ … It was exhausting and I was sort of consumed mentally.”
The actor acknowledged that he could have easily disposed of the drugs permanently by flushing them, but chose not to because “that’s too final.” Biggs described this particular night as “very close to rock bottom,” recognizing how his behavior had become completely irrational. “I was like, ‘What the [expletive] am I doing? This is absolutely insane,’” he told Lorre.
Finding Freedom Through Recovery
Now maintaining sobriety for more than seven years, Biggs reflects on his journey with gratitude and perspective. He first announced his one-year sobriety milestone in October 2018 through an encouraging Instagram post, acknowledging both the difficulty of recovery and the importance of seeking help.
“I first tried to get sober over 5 years ago, when the weight of my obsession with booze and drugs became too heavy for me to handle,” he wrote at the time. “If you’re struggling, know there’s help. Don’t be ashamed.”
The actor now describes sobriety as “freeing,” emphasizing the relief that comes from no longer being controlled by addiction. “There is a freedom that comes with not having to do those things anymore,” he shared on the podcast.
Biggs shares two children, Sid and Lazlo, with his wife Jenny, and continues advocating for addiction awareness through his openness about recovery.
